Serving the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area, which consists of the counties of Erie and Niagara, is Buffalo Niagara International Airport. The airport is located in Cheektowaga, New York, approximately 11 miles east of Downtown Buffalo, and is the busiest airport in Upstate New York. Owned and operated by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, this public airport is elevated at 728 feet or 22 metres above mean sea level, and operates with two asphalt runways, designated 5/23 and 14/32.

Due to its proximity to Canada, Buffalo-Niagara Falls International Airport also serves Southern Ontario in Canada, making it easier for the residents of the Golden Horseshoe region to travel to U.S. destinations. The Greater Toronto Area prefers to use this airport, as Canadian airports generally have higher airfares when flying to U.S. destinations due to additional customs and immigration surcharges for international flights.
