The Faleolo International Airport (APW) is a major aviation facility for Samoa, and services the capital city of Apia. This is a fairly small airport but will have access to amenities such as currency exchange, a snack kiosk, and bathroom facilities. You will be able to take one of the local buses into town, have a hotel shuttle pick you up, or take a taxi into town.

 

Apia is around 40km from the airport, but the taxi should only come to around 51WST/20USD ($27).

Things to do in Apia

 

Apia’s main attractions are the surrounding natural ones, but there are a number of things you can do in the town itself. There are several food markets that sell food and crafts, and a few museums and galleries that you should visit. The highlights being the Museum of Samoa, the EFKS Museum, and the home of the famous author of Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson.

 

There is also fascinating cultural centre that is really worth visiting. You will be able to meet the local people, and be shown Samoan traditions, cultural dances, and be given the chance to try popular dishes native to this country.

 

Outside of the cultural atrractions, there are plenty of wonderful things to see in Samoa’s great outdoors. Such as the gorgeous Papapapaitai Waterfalls, that offers some great hiking routes. Or slide down the smaller falls at the Papaseea Sliding Rocks, which is a great group activity if you are travelling with family and friends. There is also the mesmerizing Palolo Deep Marine Reserve, a shallow section of reef where you can see throngs of colourful marine life dart between the corals.

 

Then above water are the gorgeous beaches; in particular look out for Tafa Tafa Beach and Lefaga Beach. Though given the amount of beaches on this island, you’re sure to find your own favoured stretch of sand.

 

Best time to visit Apia

 

·         Apia is best visited between May and October when it is the island’s dry season. Expect the days to sit at around 30°C.

·         The wet season is best avoided, and this starts around November and ends in April.

·         Brisbane (BNE), Sydney (SYD) offer direct flights with Virgin Australia, otherwise connecting routes typically stop in Auckland (AKL).
