Taipei is Taiwan’s high-tech capital, located in the north of the country and one of the most laid-back cities in Asia. Visit it to enjoy a great mix of nightlife, shopping and restaurants, as well as a diverse mix of culture, including Japanese, Chinese and Western influences.

Things to do in Taipei

The list of things to do in Taipei is very long. The city doesn’t seem to sleep, and boasts plenty of 24-hour karaoke bars, a thriving music scene, and a plethora or themed restaurants (with themes including prison, Barbie, and toilets). At night, you should also go to the city limits where there are massive lanterns which can be set free after you make a wish upon them.

Other attractions include the Taipei 101 skyscraper – a 101-storey building that provides great views of the city; the National Palace Museum, which houses close to 700,000 pieces of imperial artifacts; and the city’s night markets, where you can try local specialties such as beef noodle soup, dumplings, and shaved ice desserts. If you’d like to take in some gorgeous scenery and enjoy a dip, then head to the Beitou district and Yangmingshan National Park for hot springs and beautiful mountains.

Summers in Taipei tend to be very hot and humid, so the best time to visit the city is during autumn, when the weather is cooler and rainfall is lower. Late spring, in April, can also be a great time to take a trip to Taipei.

Wanhua is one of the oldest in Taipei but still one of the trendiest, while Neihu is where you should go to enjoy the old and new (temples and shopping centres) side by side. Shilin is home to the National Palace Museum, while and up and coming neighbourhood is Dihua Street, which boasts an array of fascinating architectural styles, including 19th-century merchant houses and Japanese modernism.
