The Shannon Airport (SNN) is a key hub for the Galway region of Ireland, and the main port for the city of Limerick. Transiting passengers will be able to take advantage of the information desks, the cash machines, the foreign exchange counters, as well as the free WiFi, gift shops, and duty-free products. You’ll also be able to quench your thirst or stave your appetite in the café, restaurant, or pub. 

Buses and taxis are the main methods of transport into Limerick, and out to Galway. If you hop in a taxi to get to Limerick, you can get travel the 24km in about 30 minutes for around 35EUR ($50).

British Airways, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Aer Lingus, and United all offer connecting routes to Shannon from Australia.

Things to do in Shannon

Start in the nearby city of Limerick, which is home to the impressive and medieval King John’s Castle, one of the most famous monuments in the city, and an imposing site on the shoreline of the Shannon River. The city itself is small, and makes taking in the main sites such as St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. John’s Square and the numerous galleries easy to do in a day or two.

Limerick is also a great base for exploring the greater county of Shannon, allowing you to head off in the morning on a driving adventure, and come back in the evening for a pint of Guinness, and dinner in one of the excellent restaurants in town.

Once you’ve seen all there is to Limerick, visit the star-making attractions of the western coast, such as the remarkable Cliffs of Moher. This is one of Ireland’s most famous natural sites, and one that will provide you with a stomach fluttering view of the Atlantic Ocean. Or visit the Lough Gur Prehistoric Site, which has seen evidence of human habitation going back as far as 6000 years.

You can also drive out to Bunratty Castle, considered to be the best preserved castle of its kind in the nation. This is an impressive site to tour, and you can learn about the volatile past of this country, and its long-occupation by the British forces.  

Best time to visit Shannon

·         Ireland is notoriously mercurial weather-wise, but easily the safest bet is during the summer time (June-August) when the average temperature is around 19-20°C.

·         The shoulder season, and in particular the autumn is also a lovely time of year to visit Ireland. Expect highs of 17°C and lows of about 11°C.

·         Winter is chilly, but tends to hover above freezing, as long as you bring a waterproof and some layers you’ll find that the sightseeing is still a lot of fun, and there’s plenty of pubs to warm up in.

·         Summers are hot, but beautiful, with daily highs of 27-30°C. Expect the city to be full of life, but fairly crowded.

Arriving in Shannon

·         This is a long-haul destination and you will be diverted through at least two cities before arriving. Expect these to be in places like Doha (DOH), Singapore (SIN), San Francisco (SFO) and London (LHR).
