Discover Killeen
The city of Killeen is located in Bell County, Texas, USA and is considered the principal city of the so-called Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Since it is adjacent to the US military post Fort Hood, the economy of the place mainly revolves on the said post and the soldiers living in the area. This small town in central Texas is barely an hour drive from Waco and Austin and is home to various recreation sites. It has an estimated population of about 128,000 residents as per the 2010 census, with the place reportedly offering the most affordable housing market in the United States.
What to see & do
Despite its small size, Killeen offers travellers and visitors alike with activities like bowling, stargazing at a night sky in a planetarium, swimming and other outdoor adventures. At the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation area, people can enjoy swimming, waterslide, floating paddleboat dock and eating at designated picnic areas with boats, kayaks, wake boards, water skis and inner tubes readily available for rent in the park. The Mayborn Planetarium and Space Theater, which is one of the largest domed theatre in Texas, offers sky and laser light shows at night to a maximum of 180 people that it can accommodate. Meanwhile, to discover the history of the place, one should visit the First Cavalry Division and Third Armored Cavalry Regiment Museums inside the Fort Hood. This museum features an extensive collection of photos, artefacts, and military vehicles used decades ago. The city is also home to Vive Les Arts Theatre, a full-time arts organization that produces Main Stage and Children's Theatre several times each year. There are two regional shopping malls in Bell County, and one of them is located in the city, aptly called Killeen Mall. It serves as the main shopping destination in the city.
How to get around within Killeen
Going around the city is easy with the Hill County Transit District, or The Hop, which operates a fleet of public buses with eight routes going to destinations like Temple, Copperas Cove and Harker Heights. These buses can be easily seen because of the teal and purple colour of their exteriors. The public transport has recently offered green buses also operating around the city. Public utility buses in the city go through major highways like the U.S. Highway 190 (Central Texas Expressway or CenTex), Business Loop 190 (Veterans Memorial Boulevard), State Highway 195, and Spur 172 (leading into Fort Hood main gate).
How to get there
The Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport is the main drop-off point for tourists going to this small city, which offers flights to and from Dallas/Fort Worth International, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International. There are 12 airlines currently operating at this airport, which make at least 336 domestic flights every week. People can also opt to travel via private car to this destination, as it is just a three-hour drive from the bigger part of Texas, strategically located at Interstate Highway 35, on State Highway 190. Tourists can also board buses and trains going to the Arrow Trailways Bus Station located at 200 East Avenue C.
