The Foz do Iguaçu/Cataratas International Airport, also called Iguassu Falls Airport (IGU) is named for the Iguazu Falls, one of the largest natural waterfalls in the world. The airport services this popular tourist region, as many flock to see the phenomenal falls in person, and so IGU sees an average of around 600,000 people a year, and welcomes as many as 9 regular daily flights. There are ATMs and a currency service available as well as several restaurants and retail shops to browse in.

Airlines to Iguassu Falls

There are no direct flights to IGU from Australasia, but there are connecting flights available. These usually stop in other major cities in South America, such as Sao Paolo (GRU), Lima (LIM), Santiago (SCL) or an international hub like Abu Dhabi (AUH) in the UAE.

The airline carriers that operate along this route are LAN Airlines, TAM Linhas Aéreas, Iberia and Etihad Airways.

Airlines that operate directly into IGU are Gol Transportes Aéreos, Trip Airlines, LAN Airlines, TAM Linhas Aéreas and Sol Linhas Aéreas.

Getting into Iguassu Falls

By taxi

Taxis are available just outside the airport, though it is advised to arrange one at the taxi desk within the terminal. A journey to the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu will cost about 25-30BRL ($8-10)

By public transport

There is a bus that runs a route past the airport to the National Park, it comes every half an hour and costs a very cheap 3.20BRL ($1).

By car

What can you do in Iguassu Falls?

The attraction to this part of the world is completely due to the remarkable national park that spreads itself over three countries: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.

The most popular site is the Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo), where a set of waterfalls conflates to create the largest and most impressive flow of the falls. Here you can see rainbows form and reform, and enjoy the incredible views of this natural wonder.

There are plenty of activities and ways to make the most of the national park, from taking helicopters over the whole of it, to repelling down the cliff faces beside the falls, or speeding along the rapids in a jet boat, it’s easy to while away your time here.

If you want to see more of the flora and fauna of the park, you can explore the dense forests in a jungle safari, and have a chance to see the extraordinary wildlife, which consists of over 1000 species of birds and mammals, and discover this rich ecosystem up close.

Outside of the park’s attractions, there is the nearby multi-cultural city Foz do Iguaçu, where you can eat in excellent restaurants, throw back cocktails in hopping bars, and move to the rhythm of this energetic and welcoming Brazilian city.

The weather here is very temperate, and doesn’t tend to deal out extremes. You’ll find in summer (December-February) the average temperatures are around 25-26°C with winters generally not sinking lower than 15°C.

Visa: Most foreigners travelling to Brazil will need to apply for a visa before entering the country. You must apply to your nearest consulate to obtain a visa. More information can be found on the government website which outlines which foreign nationals are exempt from having to apply in advance of travel.

Please note, that because the national park is on the border with Argentina, so you will need a valid visa for entry into this country also. Please check the Argentinian government website for visa requirements for your country.
