Guangzhou International Airport (CAN) services the city of Guangzhou, and operates as a major international hub for international flights all over the world. Guangzhou International is 28km from the city centre, and transport links come in the form of taxis and buses. A taxi journey can take up to an hour depending on traffic, but usually only takes 30 minutes and costs about 120CNY ($23).

Why visit Guangzhou?

Once known as Canton, Guangzhou is the gateway city to China’s south, and has been an important port for centuries. Today, this energetic metropolis has become the Middle Kingdom’s third largest, and it sees its numbers swell each year with the Canton Trade Fair. But Guangzhou has more to it than commercial and business interests, having stood for thousands of years, you’ll discover for yourself pockets of fascinating history, a wonderful dining scene, and plenty of entertainment venues to keep even the pickiest travellers happy.

Things to do in Guangzhou

For the historical side of Guangzhou, you must visit Yuexiu Park, one of the largest outdoor green spaces in the city, and filled with some top attractions, such as the stone statue of the Five Rams, the site of the original Ming Dynasty City Wall. It’s also worth popping by the Ancestral Temple of the Chen Gamily, as this is a fine example of traditional Chinese architecture. It is also home to a Folk Art Museum, as well as and the courtyards and corridors, which all make for a lovely afternoon tour.

But one of the largest heritage attractions is Shamian Island, replete with a ton of colonial architecture from the 19^th and 20^th centuries, you can wander through baroque, neoclassical and gothic buildings on this curious and charming island.

But to really throw yourself into Guangzhou you need to take part in two things: the first is a boat tour down the Pearl River, best done in the evening when the sun goes down and the city lights start reflecting off the waters. And the second is to go down the famous Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, where you can shop ‘til you drop in one of the many stores that line this street. Or if shopping isn’t your thing, eat in one of the hundreds of excellent street stalls and restaurants for a true taste of this city.

Best time to visit Guangzhou

·         October through to March is considered to be the best time to visit Guangzhou. The autumn months, from about mid-October see lows of 20°C and highs of 28°C. The winter is pretty mild too, with highs of 18°C and lows sinking no further than 9°C.

·         Summers are wet and hot and usually not ideal for touring the city. The humidity soars, and so does the temperature; expect the mercury to hover at 30°C for the entire season.
