Option to consider

I visited this hotel during the summer holidays to have a more traditional experience quite different from what we have in the big cities and to get to know a more rural Japan, and I can say that I did not regret it.
Departing by train from Tokyo and arriving at the central station in the Hakone region there are buses that for a few euros make the transfer to the hotels.
The Okada Hotel is effectively not a recent hotel but is not poorly preserved.
We chose the Japanese Style Room with hot-spring bath.
Super traditional and no normal bed. Chair without legs Table low. Traditional dressing. To sleep on the "soil". It was an excellent night. Good sleep. To remember.
We did the "public baths" inside the hotel. A kind of "spa" in Japanese style. Men on one side and women on the other. A mixture of hot water baths and cold water showers. Extremely relaxing. Totally different from what a Western is used to.
We chose to dine at the hotel and not being a buffet from the other world gave to eat well.
I think one night here if you don't come late on the 1st day you can get an idea of a different Japan.
Enjoy

The building was quite old, but not really renovated. For us, a family from Europe, the japanese room felt quite small once the beds were spread out (by the personal, eg from 6pm until 10am). The hotel lobby and the toilet of our room smelled a bit unpleasant to us, of a very very old building.
Communication in english was relatively poor, information on were to find the different spa areas was complex to find out.
We got the feeling that international guests aren’t the main clientel group.
Staff was helpful when being asked for info etc.
The spa and onsen area was an amazing experience for us, and once we found out about the pool the kids enjoyed it much.
There is a quite nice restaurant with cheaper options than the official restaurant in the upper building.
All in all a superinteresting experience, especially because of the spa.

The Ultimate Time for the First Time

Stay in "Peony" with open-air bath in the room.
The water was just right and I was able to spend a really relaxing time with the footbath.
It was heartening to have so many different kinds of food, but it was delicious.
I want to come again.

Staying at Hakone Okada with my brother in late March was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. Our room overlooked a cherry‑blossom‑filled valley, and the view alone felt like something out of a painting. The private open‑air onsen attached to our room made it even better — soaking in the hot spring water while looking out over the sakura was unforgettable.
The public onsen was just as impressive. As first‑time onsen visitors, we were a bit nervous, but the space was beautifully designed, easy to navigate, and very foreigner‑friendly. It turned what could’ve been intimidating into a genuinely relaxing and memorable experience.
The staff were incredibly friendly, always welcoming and helpful, and the food was excellent — a perfect match for the atmosphere of the ryokan.
Overall, Hakone Okada delivered everything we hoped for and more. We’ll definitely be returning!
