Great experience, highly recommended

We had a wonderful stay at Kamesei Ryokan. Tyler, Mari and Andy were great hosts and we can’t recommend staying here highly enough. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers and found lots to do in the local area. Returning to a warm welcome, fantastic food and the onsen bath after a day of sightseeing was brilliant. Thank you Kamesei Ryokan!

Thank you for bringing your family to Kamesei Ryokan. We are grateful you enjoyed our hospitality as well as our funky little onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. Our area does have a lot to offer, like cycling along the Chikuma River Bike Path. We hope you can come back again to explore more.

Family friendly atmosphere

This family run ryokan is what I've fantasized a family friendly, foreigner and tattoo friendly experience could be like! Tyler, Mari and Andy are sincere earnest individuals and treated me and my family like special guests. We were fortunate to watch a geisha show, enjoy a kaiseki dinner and dip in the relaxing onsen water. Highly recommend and would absolutely go again!

We were honored you included Kamesei Ryokan in your busy Japan itinerary. We are grateful for your stay, and that you had us arrange the 30-minute geisha show. It is a great, interactive way to get an intimate experience of the world of geisha entertainment. We hope you get a chance someday to return. Thank you again for your stay.

A wonderful and beautiful experience

We spent 3 nights in this lovely and family-oriented ryokan. On two days, we also booked breakfast and dinner. We were picked up from the train station and received a warm welcome. We received information for excursions and were even able to rent bicycles. The onsen is simply wonderful. The food was great, lovingly presented, and personally explained each time. Each time, there were 12 different small dishes, all of which were very delicious and made us feel very full overall. All of this always in a very nice atmosphere.
At first, we were unsure how well one could sleep on a futon mattress. But this was also a very positive experience, and we slept very well. I can highly recommend this accommodation.

Thank you for coming to Kamesei Ryokan. We are grateful you stayed 3 nights and made such great memories. Our chef puts a lot of work into his kaiseki-style dinners so I am grateful you appreciated his culinary magic. And as you mentioned, our area is perfect for cycling, with the scenic bike path along the Chikuma River and lots of quiet historical towns and picturesque rice fields nearby. We hope you can come again someday.

Great First Time Ryokan experiance.

My two friends and I had an absolutely incredible stay at Kamesei Ryokan, and we can't recommend it highly enough — especially for first-time ryokan guests!
From the moment we arrived, the family-run atmosphere made us feel completely at home. Owner Tyler was so welcoming and took the time to walk us through everything — how the ryokan works, the onsen etiquette, what to expect — which was invaluable for us as ryokan newcomers. His wife Mari and their son Andy were equally warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout our stay.
Our tatami mat room was beautiful and authentically Japanese, and the gardens were absolutely stunning. The onsen facilities were wonderful — clean, well-maintained, and deeply relaxing. Kamesei is tattoo-friendly, which put us at ease.
The food was excellent. Both breakfast and dinner were exceptional — fresh, local, beautifully presented, and delicious. We'd also recommend grabbing one of Andy's coffees while you're there!
The family also helped us discover great local spots for food and activities when we weren't soaking in the onsen, and the inn's location made it easy to explore the charming Togura-Kamiyamada area. Getting there from Tokyo was straightforward, and we also had time to explore nearby Nagano.
We've already been raving about Kamesei Ryokan to all our friends and would love to return. If you're looking for an authentic, welcoming, and tattoo-inclusive ryokan experience, this is the place!

We are honored you chose Kamesei for your first ryokan experience. We are grateful you enjoyed our hospitality and that you appreciated the time we took to explain the basics of how to relax at an onsen ryokan. I will let Andy know you liked his coffee.
As you mentioned, our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is a simple 90 minute shinkansen ride from Tokyo to Ueda, then a quick 15 minute ride on the local train to Togura Station, from where we offer free pick-up / drop-off. So we hope more people sneak out from the crowded, concrete jungle of Tokyo and come out to the quiet, peaceful Nagano countryside.
And yes -- everyone and their tattoos are welcome in our onsen baths. Thanks again for your stay.

Visit for more than just a couple nights

Staying here was my favorite part of our 16 day trip to Japan. Chikuma was gorgeous with plenty of walking and biking options for those who enjoy nature but not the crowds. We went to Kamikochi afterwards and wished we had spent those nights back at Kamesei Ryokan instead.
Our room was spacious and beautiful, and what's not to like about soaking in the onsen three times a day. All of the meals we had were memorable and delicious and the Kamesei team made sure we had everything we needed. Thank you again!

Thank you for escaping the crowds and coming to Kamesei Ryokan and our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. Our river and mountains are not as spectacular as Kamikochi, but the Chikuma River and 1252-meter tall Mt. Kamuriki are scenic in their own right. And as our area is off the regular tourist route, you'll have more peace and quiet.
Thanks also for adding our chef's kaiseki-style dinner -- it's an important part of the overall ryokan experience!
