Exceeds all expectations
As a couple we spent two nights here with our dog, and although dogs can only be in a specific room, there is absolutely nothing missing.
The staff is some of the sweetest and most welcoming we have met for a long time, and our dog was very well received.
The food in the restaurant is in a class for itself. The service was not only excellent – the food was definitely gourmet at the highest level. Quality and taste were absolutely sublime! We really felt comfortable throughout our stay.
When you read some of the reviews, it seems that people expect a 24-hour reception and misunderstand the code sent by email, which should be used in the evening when the door is locked. This is obviously not a city hotel – the place is a beautiful, architect-designed, former high school in high quality. When you first arrive, the calm decreases. The forest behind offers really good paths, the beach and the water are just on the other side of the road, and the city is still close. You can hardly wish for more.
We understand that the rooms without dog can be newer but no matter what, the place is kept in the original style – and that is completely deliberate. You shouldn't let yourself be fooled by that.
Our room was actually, when we think about it, better than many hotel chains we have stayed in over the years.
In my opinion, the place is heavily underestimated.
A few years ago I was here for a confirmation, and we could undoubtedly consider driving all the way from Varde to Grenaa to hold a wedding with accommodation for guests far away. The place is as created for it.
All in all, some perfect days that have really grown on us. The staff at the reception and in the restaurant/kitchen have made the stay special.
A sweet detail: There is free coffee and cocoa around the clock and a small bar with a good selection of beer and water at very reasonable prices – based on trust. And it seems that people respect it.
The whole place is full of tranquility and a pleasant atmosphere where guests even greet each other.

Sweet staff but sad bread
We had 3 nights, with dog.
Very welcoming staff.
Nice room, a little far to walk when the dog was to be aired, but nice area to air the dog in.
The food was fine, but their homemade bread was a big disappointment, it was heavy and compact, so it was neither to cut in nor chew, thinking they use flour with too little protein.

Quality and kindness
We had a lovely trip around Djursland, where we stayed at Kysthotellet. The reception and meeting with the hotel was perfect, staff ready and friendly. The treretters menu in the evening was really good and the service so good and personal. Breakfast was also with quality all over the line.
Funny to see a terrazzo floor in 2026, but it is of course connected with the architecture.

Competent friendly and service-minded staff
Have just been on a three-day stay at the Kysthotellet in Grenaa.
A really good experience right from arrival to departure
Since one of our participants is a rollator user and had trouble forcing the seven staircases, he was quickly and kindly rebooked into a room without access to stairs.
Both the booking manager and restaurant manager were really helpful on that occasion.
All meals in the restaurant were an exquisite experience for both the eye and the palm, and when a small misunderstanding on the second day was served dessert instead of prey - this was compensated and subsequently covered up to us with coffee / tea and cakes in the hall.
All staff appear competent, friendly and service-minded.

Find somewhere else to stay. No really.
This hotel is probably the shabbiest place I have ever stayed, I can't even pick a place to start.
The Room: I travelled here with my wife and two infant kids, and we booked a family room, which was split into two adjoining rooms with a private bathrooms. We had requested a baby cot in the room, which they did provide. The Room was dusty, and we had to start our stay by wiping down the surfaces so we had a clean spot to put down our children. I know what you might be thinking, couldn't you have put them in bed? God no. The sheets where so filthy, we had some smelling like McDonalds Grease and the baby bedding they provided smelled so heavily like perfume we discarded it and used our own blankets from the car.
The Food: The hotel offers dinner, on *SOME* days if reserved in advance, paid separately. We booked dinner in their restaurant the first night, which to their credit was okay, if a little inflexible, as they couldn't accommodate my wife's ask for a lactose intolerance. We booked our stay with Breakfast, which was an open buffet with modest choices of egg, sausage, bread and some toppings. Again, descent food, but no flexibility at all for dietary preferences, as there are no staff present during this time, which brings me to the service.
Service: The hotel staff was very accommodating when we got there, and referred us to a "play room" for the kids while we where waiting for our room to be made ready. But that is about where the service ended. At 3PM sharp the reception staff goes home, and the hotel is just ENTIRELY unstaffed until the next morning after breakfast. No bar, no restaurant, NO ONE. So if you need anything, good luck. Also if you happen to lock yourself out, there is a number you can call, for an "emergency receptionist" to lock you back in remotely, but they do charge a 250DKK fee for this "service".
I have never stayed in a place where I as a guest felt so disregarded, any issues we had, couldn't be brought up to the staff because there wasn't anyone there to listen. Overall, unless all you need is a warm shower and a dusty bed, I would find another place to stay in this otherwise beautiful little town on the Danish coast.
