Connecting to the downtown area from Zurich Airport is easy, as there are options to travel by rail, bus and tram. You can also pick up a cab right outside the airport, but be warned, travelling the 13km into town will cost about 70CHF ($96).

Things to do in Zurich

Make your way to the Old Town, where once a Roman settlement stood. Explore the shaded streets that wind their way through the medieval buildings. See the four main churches that define the city skyline; Predigerkirche, Fraumünster, St. Peter and Grossmünster. Shop in the delightful boutiques that peek out from beneath the gables, and duck into traditional restaurants that operate here.

Then spend some time in the fantastic Swiss National Museum, which charts the country’s history as far back as 100,000BC, and has displays featuring everything from textiles, to jewellery and armour.

Walk down the pedestrianised Bahnhofstrausse, a wide leafy avenue that is filled with designer retailers, and upscale boutiques. Shop ‘til you drop, or window-shop all the way down to the gorgeous Lake Zurich, where the street ends.

Once you’re down by the lakeshore, you can walk along the promenade, where you cane find places to swim, places to eat, or even parks in which to picnic. If you’re keen on exploring more of the lake, then book onto a cruise of Lake Zurich, which will give budding photographers a fantastic view of the Glarus Alps.

Best time to visit Zurich

·         The shoulder seasons are best for exploring this city, when the days are warm averaging 8-15°C, but less crowded than the summer months. May in spring, and September and October in the autumn are the warmest of these months.

·         June, July and August are the best months in Zurich to explore the surrounds, as the summer season offers great hiking and swimming opportunities.

·         Winters are stunning in this city, when the days will drop to freezing, the ski hills open up, and Christmas markets pop up all over town.

Arriving in Zurich

·         Connecting flights are offered from all of Australia’s cities, though usually these will be directed through Sydney (SYD) or Melbourne (MEL) and be subject to stops in large Asian or Middle Eastern hubs like Doha (DOH) or Seoul (ICN).
