Discover Navoiy

Navoi International Airport serves the city and capital of Navoiy Province in the south-western part of Uzbekistan. The city was originally known as Kermine under the Emirate of Bukhara, a Central Asian state that existed from 1785 to 1920. Since then, a historical gap seemed to have obliterated Navoiy from the books. It was only in 1958 when the city was re-founded. This made Navoiy the youngest city in the country of Uzbekistan, and immediately started building the city by the Government Decree, now named after Alisher Navoi, the great Uzbek poet, scientist, and state figure.

Despite its young state, the area and surroundings of Navoiy have once been treaded by the Great Silk Road. Fast forward to present times, it is now one of the leading industrial centres of Uzbekistan. The region is known to have large stocks of natural gas and deposits of precious metals, as well as large stocks of raw materials for production of construction materials. Navoiy also became the first full-fledged free economic zone in the CIS - the Free Industrial-Economic Zone (FIEZ).

What to see & do

As one of the leading industrial centres of Uzbekistan, notable enterprises in Navoiy include Navoiy and Zarafshan Gold Mining and Metallurgical Complexes, which extracts one of the purest gold in the world. JSC “Navoiazot,” which specializes on production of mineral fertilizers and ammonia is also notable. The city also has its own Hydropower station, said to be the largest in Uzbekistan.

Also, one of the notable sights worth seeing would be the Rabat-i-Malik, considered as the summer residence of the Karakhanids. These are the ruins, the remnants of the medieval monument of the Karakhanid epoch. At present, the only known surviving landmark is its foundation and its entrance portal that bears an ancient inscription engraved by unknown masters. Apart from it, there are no analogous monuments which show the everyday life of the Karakhanid rulers in the Central Asia territory. Despite this, the ruins of the building leave an impression. Furthermore, the dig of the Rabat-i-Malik reveals two yards, a gallery, a small mosque, and a bath house. Over the years, restoration works were carried out in the Rabat-i-Malik, which includes the entrance portal and also parts of the walls. Rabat-i-Malik can be found a few kilometres from the city and is open for touristic visits.

From Rabat-i-Malik, you can consider heading to the Sardoba Malik Reservoir. It is a 13 metre storage reservoir built in the XI century especially to supply the Rabat-i-Malik. Water to the tank was fed by the Zaravshan River through an underground canal, and was kept there for the whole summer. For the travelling tourists, the Sardoba Malik proves to be useful as it is a source of potable water for travellers.
