Why visit Moscow, Russia

Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation as well as its most populous city. It is situated on the Moskva River in western Russia, and has at its historic core the iconic Kremlin, the fortified complex that is home to the country’s President and many tsarist treasures.

Consider heading underground when visiting Moscow. The 80-year old Moscow Metro underground system is said to be the most beautiful in the world, as it is almost as much an art gallery as it is a transport network.

Things to do in Moscow

On a visit to Moscow don’t miss checking out Red Square. It is Russia’s symbolic centre as well as the site of the State Historical Museum, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and the 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral, which has stunning, coloured, onion-shaped domes. Tourists should also head to the GUM, a huge shopping complex near Red Square; visit the Bolshoi, the oldest theatre, to see a ballet production; or listen to classical music at Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. When it comes to green space, you should spend time exploring Izmailovsky Park, which is set in a 16th-century royal estate. As well, Gorky Park is fun to visit as it has an amusement park, a Ferris wheel, and ice skating in winter.

Best time to visit Moscow

Moscow has a harsh climate and is incredibly cold in winter, so it’s best to avoid the city during that time of year.  Summer is very crowded though, so a good time to visit tends to be April to May, or September to October.
