London City Airport (LCY) is the capital’s most central airline transport hub, and flying here will take you into the centre of the city. There are lots of amenities in this airport, and passengers will find they have access to free WiFi, postal services, cash machines, a duty-free shop and a newsagents, as well as several dining options to choose from.

There are a few airlines that fly into London City Airport, and the major carriers include Alitalia, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Swiss International, FlyBe and CityJet.  

Getting into London

By taxi

There are taxis outside the airport which can take you to into London city centre for about 25GBP ($50) depending on traffic, which can be heavy in the middle of the day. Prices to Oxford Street and the West End are between 35-40GBP ($70-80). 

By public transportation

Flying into London City Airport (LCY means you will have direct access to the vast network of public transport that runs in London. The most direct of these is to head to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) service that connects up to London’s famous Tube subway system. You must purchase an Oyster card, which you can do in advance, or once you reach the station. Costs vary depending on where you are going, but an average journey costs between 3-4GBP ($6-8). 

By car

You can hire a car at LCY Airport if you’d prefer to drive. There are a few major brands that operate at this airport, which include Hertz and Europcar. If you’d rather book an advance, you can use our handy car hire search tool.  

What can you do in London?

London is a sprawling, fascinating city, and spending a lifetime here is still not enough time to see all the attractions this city can offer its visitors. However, to get a taste of London, there are plenty of places you can start.  

London is very walkable, from High Street Kensington you can walk through Kensington Gardens, past the Albert Hall, and take a detour to Knightsbridge and its famous department store, Harrods. Back into the royal gardens, it doesn’t take long until you link to the gorgeous Hyde Park, where you can enjoy the greenery before heading into Marble Arch and the city’s iconic shopping avenue; Oxford Street.  

After you are done shopping, you won’t be far from Trafalgar Square, Pall Mall and Buckingham Palace. Dip into the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery which displays major art from the 13th-19th centuries.  

Just up the road, there is Leicester Square and the quirky Covent Garden, famed for their restaurants, cinemas and of course, their West End Theatres where you can take in dinner and show.  

If you fancy seeing the whole city in all its glory, head to the River Thames and climb aboard the London Eye to see all of London’s attractions, such as Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament from above.  

When should you go?

London can experience every type of weather in a single day, however, generally the summers (June-August) average 19-20°C, though be aware that this is a busy time in the city. Spring is a less touristy time to visit, though autumn tends to be the warmer of the two shoulder seasons. Winter is cold, and tends to hover around 4°C, so if you visit during this time, be sure to pack warmly. 

What do you need to know?

Currency: Great British Pound (GBP) 

Visa: If you are a citizen of the European Union or the Commonwealth countries, you generally do not need to apply for a visa in advance of flying to London, and you will be issued with a 90 day visa upon arrival. If you are outside of those regions, then it is recommended that you check the UK government’s site for up to date visa requirements.
