José Martí International Airport (HAV)

There are two airports that service Havana, the José Martí International Airport (HAV), which is the premier air facility for Cuba’s capital, and the Playa Baracoa Airport (UPB), which handles many of the country’s regional and domestic flights. The José Martí International Airport is the one you will most likely fly into from international starting destinations, and has a variety of decent amenities, such as cash dispensers, currency exchange desks, an information counter, a post office, travel agency desks, pay phones, a pharmacy, pre-paid internet access, duty free shops, bookstores, souvenir retailers, as well as restaurants, bars and cafes.

José Martí International Airport is situated only 15km from Havana’s downtown, and easily accessed by shuttle and public buses, rented cars, or by taxi. If you hop in a taxi, expect the cost to come to about 20-25CUC ($26-33).

Typical carriers to Havana are Qantas, LATAM Airlines Group, Copa, Air Canada and Avianca.

Come to Havana, and you will be drawn into its energy and its romance.

Things to do in Havana

Exploring Old Havana is where every visitor to this city should start. A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town is awash with Baroque and Neoclassical colonial buildings that will remind you of the might of the Spanish conquest of this island. Particular highlights are the Armas Plaza, and the Catedral de San Cristobal.

In the Armas Plaza, you can get to the City Museum and learn of Havana’s indigenous culture, its colonisation, and the radical revolution that changed the face of the country forever. In fact, once you’ve visited the museum, you should make time for the Plaza de la Revolucion and its adjoining Museo de la Revolucion, and learn about the reasons why Fidel Castro and Che Guevara led this movement to victory.

Once you’ve had your fill of history, you can explore the beaches of Playa del Este, and the Santa Maria del Mar stretch where you can enjoy an ocean view whilst sitting down for a meal at one of the many restaurants in the area.

Best time to visit Havana

· As a Caribbean country, Cuba is gifted with a climate that doesn’t tend to shift past the goalposts of 20-35°C in temperature, so there isn’t a terrible time to visit the island. However, rule of thumb is to visit during Cuba’s driest stretch, which runs from November right through until April.

Arriving in Havana by plane

· Sydney (SYD) is the primary departure point for flights to Cuba, and from this hub, you can still expect at least one to two connections. Often these can be in Vancouver (YVR), Toronto (YYZ), Lima (LIM) or Santiago (SCL).

Visa requirements
