Why visit Geneva?

Geneva is often overlooked as a pit stop for diplomats and watch enthusiasts, but that is doing this city a grave injustice. Switzerland’s most famous city has a delightful medieval core that is crowned by the city’s cathedral, whilst the rest of Geneva sits against the banks of a jewel-blue lake, surrounded by snowcapped mountains. It is a city in the true Swiss style; chic, effortless, and pretty, and once you visit, you will quickly debunk its staid reputation.

Things to do in Geneva

Wander through Geneva’s Old Town, a labyrinthine series of narrow streets that wind their way around to the hilltop that overlooks Lake Geneva. The whole area is punctuated by beautiful squares, which lead to small streets that hide delightful cafes, relaxed restaurants, and quaint boutiques. Make sure you head to the St. Peter’s Cathedral, for a chance to admire its mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and if you’re feeling game, climb the North or South Towers for one of the best views in the city. Afterwards, head to the Bourg-de-Four Square, once a Roman marketplace, but now adorned with fountains, and cafes that allow you to soak in the atmosphere.

From the Old Town, stroll to the lakeside, where you’ll see the Jetée des Eaux-Vives, a jet of water that throws spray up into the air a staggering 145 metres, and has become a famous Geneva landmark. Around Bains de Pâquis you can view the jet stream, but also swim in the waters of the lake, perfect if you are visiting in the summer.

Other highlights within the city include the renowned Palais de Nations, the United Nations headquarters, and the wonderful Art and History Museum, with artefacts from Greek and Roman antiquity, as well as a collection that charts the history of Geneva and its surrounds from the Paleolithic age.
