Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is one of the busiest airports in Croatia, and serves the magical city of Dubrovnik. The facilities are good here, with free WiFi, currency exchange services, a bank, a decent duty-free shop, a travel agency, and a few cafes where you can pick up some refreshments.

Dubrovnik’s airport is situated fairly close to the city, at around 21km outside of town. Reach the city by catching the bus, hopping in a shuttle or hailing a taxi outside the terminal. A taxi fare from the airport to the downtown area will come to around 170-200HRK ($33-39).

Things to do in Dubrovnik

Begin with embarking on a tour of the Dubrovnik’s old city walls, established as early as the 10^th century, these stunning stone walls really lend the city that storybook quality. On the way you can admire some of the best views in the city, as well as explore the towers and forts that line the walls. End your tour of these walls at Pile Gate, a beautiful 15^th century carved stone archway, one of the most lovely entry-ways into the city.

Once you’re finished exploring the walls, head for the Stradun, a pedestrianised thoroughfare in Dubrovnik that acts as one of the city’s main arteries for cafes, restaurants, and shops that you can explore in this atmospheric and beautiful limestone paved street. Make sure you make a detour for the stunning Dubrovnik Cathedral, one of the town’s most iconic landmarks.

For history buffs, the place to add to your itinerary is the Rector’s Palace, where the Cultural Historical Museum is now situated. Learn about Dubrovnik’s past under Roman and Venetian rule by touring this wonderful museum.

For a little adventure, book a trip out to Fort Lovrijenac, a dramatic building due to its being positioned on a rocky outcrop, and its reputation as the ‘impregnable’ fortress of Dubrovnik.

Best time to visit Dubrovnik

·         Dubrovnik is a coastal city, and experiences a Mediterranean climate of warm summers and mild winters.

·         For sun, sea and sand, the summer months (June-August) are best, when you can expect the temperature to be a lovely 24-26°C.

·         If you aren’t super married to visiting in the summer, than September and October are still warm months, hovering at 21-25°C, but you’ll find that flights and accommodation tend to be much cheaper.

Arriving in Dubrovnik

·         You can fly from Sydney (SYD) to Dubrovnik, but these flights are subject to one or two layovers. Usually through Asian and European hubs like Bangkok (BKK) or Vienna (VIE).
