Tromso Airport (TOS)

Tromso Airport (TOS) is the largest airport servicing the northern regions of Norway, and as such is pretty well equipped to handle the hundreds of thousands of passengers that pass through its gates every year. The facilities are not exhaustive, but they have a good selection of dining options from fast food like Pizza Hut to cafes and bars. There is a bookstore, a newsagents and a duty free store. There are also ATMs, baggage storage areas and free WiFi available throughout the airport for up to 2 hours.  

Airlines that fly to Tromso

There are no direct flights to Tromso from Australia, all journeys all this route will involve at least two stopovers. These will usually be in large transportation hubs like Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH) or Bangkok (BKK), and will likely involve a change in Oslo (OSL), Norway’s main airport.  

Major airlines that operate flights to Tromso are Condor, Emirates, SAS, Qantas, British Airways, Qatar Airways and Thai Airways. 

Getting into Tromso

By taxi

You will find a taxi rank just outside of the airport’s arrivals hall, the journey only takes about 10 minutes into the city centre and will cost around 150NOK ($25), but this price can rise substantially on Sundays to 260NOK ($42).  

By public transportation

There are two different methods of travelling into the centre of town via mass transit. You can either take the local buses (Routes 40 and 42) that take 15-20 minutes, and you purchase the tickets at a kiosk within the arrivals hall. The second option is to take the Airport Express Coach, which comes approximately every 10 minutes, takes only 15 to get into town, and costs 90NOK ($15) for a single and 140NOK ($22) for a return.  

By car

There are several car hire companies that operate out of TOS Airport, these can be found on the first floor near the check-in area. All the major brands are represented, such as Avis, Budget and Hertz. If you’d rather book an advance, you can use our handy car hire search tool.  

What can you do in Tromso?

Set over 200 miles within the Arctic Circle, this northern Norwegian city has more than a hint of magic to it. Often used as a jumping off point for travellers to go even further north, it would be a mistake to skip over this city.  

Start by taking a cable car up to Mount Floya were you will be able to see Tromso in its entirety, and beyond it the gorgeous Lyngen Alps, the Istindan Mountains and Mount Tromsdalstinden. When you come back down to earth, make a point of visiting the delightful 19th century Tromso Cathedral and compare it to the stark modernity of the Arctic Cathedral designed by Jan Inge Hovig in the 1960s.

If you’re heading up north, you can enhance your tour of this country by going to the Tromso University Museum and the Science Centre of Northern Norway where you can learn about the local people, and the phenomena so many people come to Norway to glimpse: the awe inspiring Northern Lights. The Polaria is another wonderful museum dedicated to the flora and fauna of the Arctic region, perfect if you want a taste of what’s to come.

When should you go?

Tromso is in a subarctic region of the world, and unfortunately has no dry season. The driest month tends to be May, but since most people come to this part of the world to spy the Northern Lights, the best season for this is between September and April. But pack warmly, the average temperatures during these months ten to be between -4°C and 7°C. 

What do you need to know?

Currency: Norwegian Krone (NOK)

Visa: If you’re part of the European Union or hold an Australian passport you do not need to apply for a visa in advance of visiting Norway, and you will be issued with a 90 day visa on arrival. If you are outside of those regions, then you can check this government website for up to date visa requirements.
