The Franjo Tudman Airport (ZAG) services the capital city of Zagreb in beautiful Croatia. It is a key hub for many flights in and out of the country, and as a decent range of facilities. Sort out your banking needs when you land by accessing the bureau de change and ATMs in the airport, connect to friends and family with the WiFi, and pass the time by browsing the duty-free shops, or eating in one of the restaurants, cafes or bars available in the terminal building.

The airport sits around 10km south of Zagreb, and travelling between the two is done via bus or taxi. If you choose to take the latter, expect the pumped-up fare for tourists to total around 300HRK ($59), but the normal price should be around 200HRK ($39).

Why visit Zagreb?

Despite being Croatia’s capital, many travellers overlook Zagreb in favour of the country’s long and beautiful coastline, but that is a grave pity. Zagreb holds within its heart much of the nation’s history, and is home to fascinating museums and galleries, as well as being the cosmopolitan hub for those seeking the best in Croatian dining, nightlife and shopping. Beyond that, Zagreb still has the cobbled streets, old churches, and pretty squares that are synonymous with the beautiful cities of Croatia.

Things to do in Zagreb

Touring Zagreb should really start with its excellent cultural institutions. In particular, the Gallery of Modern Art, which primarily displays arts from national painters, such as Mirko Racki, and the Archeological and Ethnographic Museum, which has an extensive collection of artefacts from across Europe.

Outside of the museums though, you must visit the Zagreb Cathedral, built in the 13^th century, this incredible building is a testament to some of the best medieval architecture in the country. Don’t forget to pop into the treasury on site, where you can see all the important works and objects of the church. Another item to add to the itinerary is the Croatian National Theatre, where you can enjoy the Viennese architecture, and a ballet or a play.

For a taste of the outdoors, you must head to the city’s Botanical Garden, which boasts lovely walks that will take you by ponds, over bridges and under the cool shade of the trees. Or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous, why not go on a day trip to the incredible Plitvice National Park, known for its magical waterfalls, and wandering wooden walkways where you can lose yourself in the beauty of the countryside.

Best time to visit Zagreb

·         Zagreb’s climate is very mild most of the year, so really you can tour this city anytime between April and November and be pretty comfortable. Average days swing between 16-21°C, with summer peaking at 24-26°C.

·         Winters are cold though, and can see the mercury dip below freezing. This is great for keen skiers, but for the average sightseer, you may want to consider packing an extra layer.

Arriving in Zagreb

·         Flights from Australia to Zagreb are always diverted through two layovers, usually in Asian hubs like Hong Kong (HKG), or Middle Eastern ones like Doha (DOH), follow by a European stop, like in Frankfurt (FRA).
