Discover Montreal Mirabel

As one of the largest airports in the world, Montreal-Mirabel International Airport used to be the primary airport of the city of Montreal. It was planned to be the primary gateway to Montreal due to a projected high volume of incoming passenger traffic in the late 20th century. This was not realised, however, as the number of travellers going here remained lower than expected. One main reason is the distant location of Montreal-Mirabel International Airport, as well as the lack of adequate urban transport links.

The continued operations of Dorval Airport, which lies nearer to the city, also contributed to the low number of passengers. This port of entry was eventually chosen to become the commercial transport hub, which relegated Montreal-Mirabel International Airport to being a cargo airport. Tourists going to the area will therefore find it more convenient to connect to Dorval Airport, which was eventually renamed 'Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport' as their port of entry to the city.

What to see & do
Montreal, a city with an old European feel with contemporary buildings and other structures, makes a fascinating area to visit. The Basilique-Notre Dame is one of the most famous sights here due to its colourful, if slightly gaudy design of carved wood, stained-glass windows, paintings, and sculptures. It also has a Casavant organ and the Gros Bourdon, which is claimed to be the biggest bell in North America. The Musee des Beaux-Arts de Montreal should also be added to the itinerary. It features fine examples of Canadian art such as those by Jean-Baptiste Roy-Audy and Paul Kane. European masterpieces by artists such as Rembrandt, Picasso, and Monet can also be found here.

Those with an interest in science should not miss the Biosphere, a striking dome housed in Bunkminster Fuller. The nature centre features its own geothermal energy system with fun interactive displays using hand pumps and waterspouts. Visitors can also view exhibits on urban ecosystems and other technologies focused on the protection and preservation of the environment. From here, tourists can then think on what they have learned in Parc du Mont Royal, a sprawling green space where one can jog, ride a bicycle, or go horseback riding. Those visiting in winter can also enjoy cross-country skiing and tobogganing, which makes the place fun to see.

Food is also one of the captivating attractions in Montreal. Little Italy is one of the main attractions here, where one can go on a food walking tour. Well-known restaurants, grocery stores, and the Jean Talon Market, the biggest outdoor market in North America, can be found here. Cultural landmarks can also be visited here such as the Madonna della Defesa Church, Dante Park, and the St Laurent Boulevard. Those fond of wine can also check out the wine country of Montreal. Winter is the best time to visit in the area, as wineries host events from wine tastings to gourmet lunches.
