Why visit Warsaw?

Things to do in Warsaw

Warsaw is never quite so charming, as it is in its Old Town. In this part of the city you will find colourful selection of narrow alleyways that open out onto quaint squares, where you can sit at a café and watch the world go by. Having been rebuilt after World War 2, this is perhaps the newest European Old Town you will come across, but much of it has been reconstructed beautifully. Head to Market Square, where many of the town’s events take place. Look out for the Warsaw Mermaid, a monument that sits in the centre of the square.

Nearby, you will also find the Castle Square, and the Royal Castle, one of three royal residences. Though if you can, you must make time for the Lazienki Krolewskie Palace, and the Wilanow Park Palace. Both of these complexes are set within lush gardens, and have dedicated museums with large and excellent art collections.

But for museums, you are spoiled for choice in Warsaw. See the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews that recounts the millennia of this people in Poland, including the tragic events of World War 2. There is also the fascinating Warsaw Rising Museum, which charts Poland’s fight for independence.

For music lovers, there are many spots within the city dedicated to the life of Fryderyk Chopin, including a museum named after the great man. Today, visitors to the city can see where the great composer lived, studied and held his first concerts.

Best time to visit Warsaw

· Summer, from June to August are the best months to go to Warsaw, when the days can be anywhere from 19-30°C.

· Spring and autumn are milder, at 11-18°C, but are great for city-sightseeing.

Best time to book

· Flights to Europe can be booked anytime between 15 weeks and seven months, but the earlier you book, the better the prices.

· Polish Zloty (PLN).

· Buy a coffee in Warsaw for a reasonable 8.50PLN ($3).

Arriving in Warsaw by plane

· The Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) is the main international aviation hub in Warsaw. There is another airport—the Warsaw Modlin Airport (WMI)—but this is for low-cost continental carriers only, and do not receive long-haul flights. Airlines that fly to the city’s main hub, Warsaw Chopin, include Air France, Lufthansa, Qantas, China Southern, KLM, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, Air Berlin, Aegean Airlines, KLM, Qatar Airways, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Swiss Air, Finnair and Etihad Airways.

· The international airport is 8km from central Warsaw, and has a variety of amenities, such as bureau de change counters, ATMs, designer retailers, duty-free shops, free WiFi, and several restaurants to choose from.

· On this route, you are likely to stop at least twice. Usually in Singapore (SIN), Bangkok (BKK), Vienna (VIE), Bangkok (BKK) and Frankfurt (FRA).

Visa requirements

· Australian nationals do not need a visa to travel to Poland, but conditions of entry are subject to changes, so before you travel, please check with the Polish Embassy that you are still able to travel without obtaining permission.

Transportation to city centre

· A taxi from Warsaw Chopin Airport into downtown will cost 35-50PLN ($12-17).

· Buses connect the airport to the city, but you can organise a pick-up through Skyscanner to meet you on arrival.

Where to stay in Warsaw

· The Old Town is perfect for history buffs wanting to explore all the attractions in this part of town, and there are enough affordable and luxury hotels to suit all kinds of travellers. There are also a lot of family-run establishments in the Old Town.

· The city centre has a larger range of hotels, including luxury and budget options, with the added advantage of being within close range of many of the city’s popular sites.

· For beauty, parks and Chopin’s House, book a room in the Lazienki area of town.

Useful tips before you go

· Average tipping rates in Warsaw are 10-15%, though not obligatory.

· Greetings for good friends usually involve a kiss on each cheek, otherwise a handshake is the usual greeting.
