Discover Vientiane

Vientiane is the capital of Laos, and its airport, the Vientiane International Airport (VTE) is the busiest hub in the country, and welcomes in most of the international flights to Laos. The airport, commonly referred to as the Wattay International Airport, sees over a million passengers annually, and is the operations base for the flag carrier, Lao Airlines and Lao Central Airlines. Traditionally, this facility also functions as an important military hub for the nation.

The location of the airport has much to recommend it, primarily that it is a mere hop, skip and a jump from central Vientiane. Situated 5km outside of the CBD, getting to and from the airport is a cinch. In terms of provisions, you can access important amenities like cash machines to take out your holiday cash, and currency exchange services in case you need to change it over to Laotian currency.

There are restaurants you can grab a bite in, a bar you can enjoy a drink in, and a duty-free shop you can browse while you wait. There is also an internet café, and an information desk if you need a little direction.

Fly to Vientiane with carriers like Thai Airways, China Eastern, Emirates, Bangkok Airways, Vietnam Airlines, SilkAir, Korean Air and Singapore Airlines will offer connecting routes to this city from Australia.

Travel Information

· There are car rental options in Vientiane’s airport, but you may find it is much easier to book a rental car online. To get from the airport into town, you only need head southwest onto Route 13, and continue on this road until you reach the centre of town.

· There are public bus services into the city but these can be a little hard to navigate if you are new to the city, but if you’re game, this is the cheapest option into the city, costing around about 50 cents USD/4000LAK (65 cents). Check with your hotel to see if they offer pick-ups, or book an airport transfer with our search tool.

· There are a number of options when it comes to taxis. You can buy a coupon within the airport for a car-taxi for about 6USD/54000LAK ($8). There are small tuk-tuks, but you will have to haggle for your fare, and sometimes this can prove more expensive than a regular taxi.
