Why visit Split?
The city of Split is not as famous as its sister city of Dubrovnik, nor as large as the capital of Zagreb, but that is what makes Split perhaps the most charming of all three. Sitting on the coast, looking out to the beautiful Adriatic Sea, and backed by coastal mountains, Split will command your attention. It is a beautiful city, with a medieval core, Roman ruins, and a contemporary dining and shopping scene that will have you wondering why it isn’t Croatia’s flagship city.
Things to do in Split
Diocletian’s Palace should be number one on any itinerary to Split. This incredibly well preserved Roman Palace has stood for 1700 years, and is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Marina Tower, the Temple of Jupiter, Peristyle Square, and Diocletian’s Mausoleum.
A nice tie-in attraction is the Split Archaeological Museum, founded in the early 19th century and boasting collections running through the prehistoric era, through to the Greeks, Romans, Early Christians and the Middle Ages.
For another side of Split, head to the Peoples Square, which is made up of buildings in the Renaissance and Gothic style, standing in pleasant contrast to the older parts of town. Stop by the statue of Grgur Ninski, and touch his thumb, an act that is meant to bring happiness and grant your wishes!
If you want to make the most of the coast, then you can reach the beaches of Zlatni Rat and the Pakleni Islands pretty easily from Split. Brela beach is the most vaunted of this area, as the sands are white and the waters are clear as crystal, but all along this part of the coast you will find fantastic spots for sun, sea and sand.
