Espiritu Santo (SON)

Santo-Pekoa International Airport (SON)
You’ll find that the Santo Pekoa International Airport is the main airport of Vanuatu and services the island of Espiritu Santo. Only 6km from Luganville, sometimes called Santo, one of the largest cities in Vanuatu.

Getting into Espiritu Santo
By taxi
You will find taxis outside the airport, and these cost about 700VUV ($9) to get into Luganville.
By public transportation
If you decide not to take a taxi you can take a bus (look out for a B on the license plate) for a cheap and cheerful 200VUV ($2.50). However, check with your hotels, as many large hotels offer transfers to and from the airport.
By car

What can you do on Espiritu Santo?
It should come as no surprise that the majority of Espiritu Santo’s attractions are natural ones. If you are a water baby there are few places in the world that offer as many underwater treasures as Vanuatu does. Dive beneath the ocean to explore the SS President Coolidge, a 1930s luxury liner that now functions as one of the most incredible wreck dives in the world.
If you’d prefer snorkelling, you can investigate the blue holes that produce stunning havens for corals, or mix in a little adventure and trek to the Millennium Cave where you can discover the gorgeous rainforest of the island on your way and then jump into the waterfalls of this cave to cool off before heading back.
If relaxing is more you style, then head to any number of gorgeous beaches on the island, such as the Golden Beach or Champagne Beach.
In town, you can wander the colourful markets next to the Sarakata River, or try kava in one of the town’s bars. Here you can also organise cultural tours out to Kastom Villages, where you can learn about the indigenous people and the traditional culture of the island.
When should you go?
Generally it is best to visit Vanuatu between the months of April and October. This is when the islands experience their dry season and the temperatures hover between 18-28°C. You can visit later in the year, but from November through the March the heat spikes uncomfortably and Vanuatu enters its wet season.
What do you need to know?
Currency: Ni-Vanuatu Vatu (VUV)
Visa: If you hold an Australian passport you will not need to apply for a visa in advance of flying to Vanuatu, and you will be issued with a visa on arrival. However you must have a return ticket, and your passport must be valid for six months when you travel.
