Why visit Thessaloniki?

Located on the northeastern coast of mainland Greece, Thessaloniki does not get the accolades of Athens, but in many ways it is the more charming city. Much smaller than the capital, Thessaloniki nevertheless is choc-a-bloc with ancient wonders, medieval castles, important archeological museums, and city walls. You are in close proximity to the mighty Mount Olympus, and the gorgeous Greek coastline is a mere hop, skip, and a jump away.

Things to do in Thessaloniki

Why not start with the ancient attractions of this lovely town. We recommend you visit the Archeology Museum first to give yourself an insight into the attractions within the city, but to also learn about the various cultures that have shaped this city. Then armed with information, you can better enjoy the ancient monuments of Thessaloniki. Start by ticking off the Byzantine Walls (315 BCE) that functioned as defensive ramparts for the city, and see the Arch of Galerius (297 CE), once the Roman entrance gate to Thessaloniki.

Then there are attractions from the Ottoman period, such as the glorious White Tower along the Seafront, where you can also find the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Or see the Church of the Holy Apostles, another 14th century building that was once a mosque.

Discover the monuments and attractions of Ano Poli, the Old Town of Thessaloniki, and filled with Ottoman-influenced fountains. This also makes for a lovely afternoon’s strolling, as you can pop into medieval churches, sit in the squares, and duck into local restaurants to grab a bite.

Lastly, if you can, schedule a trip to the extraordinary Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Greece, and said to be the home of the Greek Gods. If you are an experienced climber, you can hike the summit and enjoy the view from around 2900 metres above sea level!
