Also known as Butmir Airport, Sarajevo International Airport is the main international airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina, operated by the Bosnia and Herzegovina Directorate of Civil Aviation (BHDCA). The airport is located 3.3 nautical miles (6.1 kilometres; 3.8 miles) southwest of the railway station in the capital city of Sarajevo in the suburb of Butmir. It serves as the home base for B&H Airlines. There were 709,901 passengers who travelled through Sarajevo International Airport in 2014.

The airport is elevated at 1,708 feet (521 metres) above mean sea level. It has one asphalt runway, directed 12/30 and has a length of 8,858 feet (2,700 metres).

What to see & do

There are free walking tours offered in the city that visitors can sign up on to learn more about Sarajevo from a local’s point of view. These tours cover several areas, including Old Town, with its cobbled streets, mosques, and Oriental-style shops; Latin Bridge, known in history as the location of the 28 June 1914 assassination of Archduke of the Austrian Hungarian Empire Franz Ferdinand, which sparked the beginning of World War I; Yellow Fortress, where a war cemetery is located, and also provides great views of Sarajevo; and museums like Bosnian Historical Museum and Sarajevo City Museum. Should you find yourself in the city during festival season, might as well make the most of your stay. There’s Sarajevo Film Festival, held annually in June or August, which is one of Europe’s best film festivals, and the largest of its kind in Southeastern Europe; MESS - International Theatre Festival Sarajevo during October; Sarajevo Jazz Festival; and Sarajevo Winter International Festival, among others.

How to get around within Sarajevo

Before or upon your arrival at Sarajevo International Airport, it is best to purchase a map. These are available at bookstores in the city, all of which are located downtown, or at the kiosk next to the Latin Bridge. Since asking locals for directions is not exactly helpful (most of them aren’t familiar with the names of streets), walking around with a map in hand and familiarising yourself with the environment is a great way to navigate and explore the city. If you get tired or prefer to take a taxi instead, know first that there are taxi scams operating in the city. It’s best to know the maximum rates prior to hailing one, and if you can, avoid the ones from main train or bus station, and even the airport, as they charge more to tourists. It’s better to ask the place where you’ll be staying for pickup service than take a taxi from the airport.

How to get there

There are several airlines that offer scheduled, seasonal, and charter passenger flights from a number of destinations to Sarajevo International Airport. Some of them are Adria Airways, Air Serbia, Austrian Airlines, B&H Airlines, Croatia Airlines, flydubai, Germanwings, Lufthansa, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Pegasus Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, and Turkish Airlines. From the airport, one can take a bus or taxi to the city centre. Other ways of getting in include by train from Croatia (the sole international train service), from Zagreb and Ploče (via Mostar); by private car or minibus from Belgrade; and by inter-city bus.
