Siem Reap International Airport (REP) operates as the gateway port to the ancient city of Angkor, and the delightful town of Siem Reap. It is one of Cambodia’s major airports, but the facilities aren’t extensive. However, you’ll find everything you need, such as free WiFi, access to ATMs, a few restaurants, a pharmacy, a duty-free section, and a spa.

Taxis are the only real option for getting from the airport into the city, but the 7km journey is pretty cheap and cheerful, coming in at around 10USD/41000KHR ($13) for the airport van, or 7USD/28000KHR ($9) for a regular taxi.

Why visit Siem Reap?

Siem Reap is a delightful little town that sits within the lush northern climes of Cambodia, and below the ancient city of Angkor. Having grown to accommodate travellers wanting to retrace the steps of the Khmer Kings of old, Siem Reap has developed a great nightlife, excellent dining, quirky shopping opportunities, and makes a wonderful base for anyone wanting to explore both the city of Angkor, and the province as a whole.

Things to do in Siem Reap

The once -hriving city of Angkor has stood, in one form or another, for over 800 years, and it is to here where you will inevitably be drawn if you fly to Siem Reap. The reputation of this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site precedes it, and it will not disappoint; ancient carved temples rise up through the dense jungle, and have commanded the imagination of every person that has stood beneath their shadow.

See the sun rise behind the huge Angkor Wat, perhaps the most famous of the temples, or take your camera to the photogenic Ta Phrom temple, slowly being overtaken by the roots of the trees that surround it. If you can, it is worth buying the three-day pass to the complex, and taking a bike ride around the off-grid temples to fully explore the ingenuity of these ancient Cambodians, then pop into the Angkor National Museum to learn how far the influence and might of the Khmer Empire’s capital spread.

Outside of Angkor, delve into some more modern history by visiting the Cambodian Landmine Museum and Relief Facility, which involves moving exhibits, and a school for children affected by these remnants of the civil war. As for exploring the town, you can’t go wrong by walking along the Siem Reap River, or trying the many eateries and bars on the famously named Pub Street.

Best time to visit Siem Reap

·         Siem Reap is best from November to January, and even through to April, is when the weather is dry and sits around 27-29°C.

·         The monsoon falls from August to October, and if you visit during this time, you’ll find the weather a little cooler (at 25-27°C) but you will experience short and sharp downpours.

·         May through to July prefaces the monsoon, and gets uncomfortably hot. This is usually the season to avoid, unless you love 40°C heat.

·         Flights usually are directed through Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Singapore (SIN) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL).
