Why visit Marrakech?

It is hard to think of Morocco without thinking of the colourful and energetic streets of Marrakech. It is the country’s largest city and its capital, and the museums and attractions that fill Marrakech attest to that. Come to this city and lose yourself in the desert climes, the spiced air, and bustling marketplaces that make this destination so unique.

Things to do in Marrakech

On your first day in this city, learn its history by stepping into the Marrakech Museum. This excellent institution charts the journey this city has come on, and investigates the lives of its many rulers. This attraction is paired really well with the Saadian Tombs, where the rulers of this dynasty were buried. Then make the time for the Koutoubia Mosque too, a fixture of the city since the 12th century and an important religious centre in Marrakesh.

Then dive into the Medina, the central part of the city where you can find the traditional bazaars, shops and eateries that evoke the older side of Morocco. You can spend a whole afternoon in the Medina’s main square, the Djemaa El Fna, where fortunetellers will read your palms, snake charmers will capture your imagination, and storytellers will spin a great yarn.

Outside of the city are the Atlas Mountains, and in summer you can hike, and trek all around this range. If you visit in winter, you can go to the popular skiing resorts of Oukaimeden or Ourika Valley.
