Why visit Shanghai?

The glittering city of Shanghai is frequently cited as China’s most cosmopolitan, and it’s easy to see why: with cuisine from all over the world, a mix of modern and colonial architecture, an old soul and a contemporary spirit, this is a city that draws people to it like moths to a shining flame.

Things to do in Shanghai

Shanghai is often dismissed for its historical attractions, but that is not fair. Shanghai has a wonderful range of sites for newly minted visitors to explore, not least of which is the Longhua Temple and Pagoda, built in the 10th century and set in a beautiful park adorned with peach blossom trees, or the gorgeous Yuyuan Garden, a Ming Dynasty garden cultivated over 400 years. There are also wonderful monasteries, like the Jade Buddha Monastery, which features intricately carved jade statues of both a seated and reclining Buddha.

Or for a look at the colonial imprint on Shanghai, head to the French Concession Region, and stroll through the atmospheric streets, and past old European buildings that now house contemporary boutiques, restaurants and cafes.

For a taste of that famed shopping scene in Shanghai, you need look no further than Nanjing Road. Likened to Fifth Avenue in New York or Oxford Street in London, this is the place to splash some cash on holiday. Then, when you’re done with your retail therapy, find your way to Yunnan Nan Lu, the city’s most famous food street, where Chinese cuisine is front and centre, and you will be spoiled for choice.

And when the sun starts to set, head to the Bund, a promenade on the bank of the Huangpu River, where the architecture tells a story of the city’s history, blending the modern with buildings after Baroque, Classical and even Gothic styles. In the evening the Bund lights up, and you can see these spectacular buildings reflected in the water below, and truly see why so many people rank Shanghai as their favourite city.
