Penang International Airport (PEN)

Penang International Airport is the primary hub for travellers wanting to explore Malaysia’s historical northwest coast. Within the airport, passengers will have access ATMs, bureau de change booths, duty-free shops and several dining options.

Only 15km south of the region’s capital city, George Town, this airport is ideally located for exploring the towns and cities on this lovely coast. There are buses that can take you to George Town, but many passengers choose to take a taxi instead. A typical fare out to George Town via taxi will produce a fare of about 38-45MYR ($12-15).

Most flights from Australia to Penang are operated by AirAsia, but other popular carriers along this route are Virgin Australia, Qantas, Emirates, China Southern, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

Things to do in Penang

George Town is where many guests start their journey in Penang, and that is a sensible choice. Strolling through the unique streets of George Town will give you an insight into the city’s colonial past. Walk down Love Lane, or King, Pitt and Carnarvon streets for the best feel for this city. Then stroll to Little India, and wander around the temples, and dip into the excellent restaurants that litter this part of town.

Make time for the Penang Museum and Art Gallery to learn about the history of the place, and about people of the area through their art. Then visit the Penang Islamic Museum, which charts the contribution of Islam and how it spread through the area, and complete the tour by dropping by the Kapitan Keling Mosque.

For excellent day trips, you can head to Monkey Beach for a vision of that perfect coastline, with golden sandy beaches lapped by gentle jade waves, explore the coral reefs in the Pulau Payer Marine Park, or explore the dense Mangrove Forests for a chance to spot the endangered and remarkable orangutans.

Best time to visit Penang

· The temperature rarely fluctuates in this part of the world, with highs of 30-31°C and lows of 22-23°C, you will never be uncomfortably cold in Penang. So the best time to judge when to visit is November to January, when the whether is at its driest and there is lots going on in the city.

· February to April is quieter, and better if you prefer lower prices and fewer people.

· The wet season runs from May to October, and is best avoided unless you love the rain.
