Şırnak Şerafettin Elçi Airport, or Şırnak Airport, is a public airport located near the town of Cizre in Şırnak Province, Turkey. It is situated 60 kilometres away from the town centre of Şırnak, residing at an elevation of 2,038 feet (621 metres) above mean sea level. The airport is owned by DHMI and is named in honour of native politician Şerafettin Elçi (1938-2012).

The Turkish province of Şırnak is located in south-eastern Anatolia, bordering Siirt Province to the north, Van Province to the northeast, Iraq to the southeast, Syria to the southwest, Mardin Province to the west, and Batman Province to the northwest. It is divided into seven districts: Beytüşşebap, Cizre, Güçlükonak, İdil, Silopi, Uludere, and the capital district Şırnak.

What to see & do

Mount Nemrut - Mount Nemrut or Nemrud is a mountain in south-eastern Turkey. It peaks at the height of 7,001 feet (2,134 metres) and is notable for its summit, which contains several large statues around what is assumed to be a first-century BC royal tomb. A good base for trips to Mount Nemrut is the town of Kahta.

Library of Celsus - The Library of Celsus is an ancient Roman building located in Ephesus, Anatolia, and is a major attraction in the country. The library was built in honour of the Roman Senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus and designed to store 12,000 scrolls. It also serves as a mausoleum for Celsus, whose final resting place is in a crypt beneath the library. The library's interior was said to be destroyed by an earthquake in 262 AD, and the façade by a different earthquake in the 10th- or 11th-century AD. The library was in ruins for centuries, until the façade was re-erected by archaeologists sometime between 1970 and 1978.

Düden Waterfalls - The Düden Waterfalls are a group of waterfalls formed by the Düden River. Surrounding these falls is a park, but they can also be scene from a different vantage point at the sea: this can be done by taking a boat trip from Antalya yacht harbour. The Düden Waterfalls are located 12 km northeast of Antalya.

Hadrian's Gate - Hadrian's Gate, also known as Üçkapılar (meaning "The Three Gates" in Turkish), is a triumphal arch in Antalya. It was built in the name of the Roman emperor Hadrian, and features three arched gates.

How to get around within Şırnak

Bus and minibus service is available but are not very frequent. Schedules are not followed to the dot, so be prepared to do some waiting up to an hour or so. There are private vehicles that serve as taxis, but be warned that the rates are higher than one might expect. Haggling is common. Hitchhiking is generally safe in Turkey. It is advisable, however, to stick to the main roads if opting to hitchhike.
