Why visit Hamburg?

Sitting on the River Elbe, and connected to the North Sea, Hamburg is Germany’s most important port city. It is a city with ties to Charlemagne, has a mercantile history that was developed in the Middle Ages, and is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site. But beyond its impressive resume as a prominent European city, this is a place of culture, art and cuisine, and true to its namesake of being the Gateway to the World.

Things to do in Hamburg

To kick off your trip to Hamburg, tour this city’s gorgeous heritage buildings. See the City Hall in the Old Town, a Neo-Renaissance building constructed in the late 19^th century, and an imposing monument in this part of town. The St. Peter’s Church is a stone’s throw away, and is a staple of the Hamburg skyline.

Shopaholics will be able to find their heart’s desire on Monckeberstrasse, just nearby where all the big retails stores reside. Meanwhile, budding photographers will love the Binnenakter and Aussenalter, lakes around which beautiful streets, lovely parks, and friendly cafes cluster. These open spaces are great for people watching and picture snapping, and taking a break from touring by sipping on a delicious local coffee.

Culture vultures will want to hit the city’s many museums and galleries; particular favourites being the Hamburg Museum, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and the stunning Kunsthalle—the premier art gallery in the city. However, the most important museum in the city is probably the International Maritime Museum, which charts much of Hamburg’s history as the people and culture was intimately connected with this industry.

· Late spring and through to early autumn (May-September) are considered the best months to visit this city, the temperature averages 12-23°C and there’s lots going on in the city.

· Winters are cold, and can be fairly rainy, so make sure you pack a waterproof and a coat to withstand temperatures of 0-3°C.

Arriving in Hamburg by plane

· Hamburg International Airport (HAM) is the only major aviation facility in the city. Airlines that travel to this hub are British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Thai Airways, Qantas, Austrian Airlines, Malindo Air and Turkish Airlines.

· About 10km from the city, Hamburg Airport is well linked to the centre of town. Passengers will have access to ATMs, foreign exchange counters, free WiFi for up to 60 minutes, duty-free shopping, restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as conference and business services.

· There are one or two stops involved in long-haul flights to Europe. Expect your route to include a layover in places like Bangkok (BKK), Hong Kong (HKG), Singapore (SIN), Vienna (VIE), Munich (MUC), or Frankfurt (FRA).

Visa requirements

· As part of the Schengen Convention, Germany allows Australians to enter the country for up to 90 days without a visa, as long as you have at least 6 months remaining on your passport. These restrictions can change so check the Australian Foreign Affairs website for the latest information.

Transportation to city centre

· Hopping in a taxi from the international airport to Hamburg’s city centre will cost about 20-30EUR ($29-44).

· There are trains, and buses that run between Hamburg International and the downtown areas, or you can arrange an airport transfer through Skyscanner before you fly.

· If you’re planning on driving around Hamburg, then there are rental agencies in the airport’s terminals, or you can a car book with our search tool in advance.

Where to stay in Hamburg

· Rotherbaum is filled with pubs, and restaurants and has a good range of hotels. Nearby, there is the more upmarket Harvestehude, which is quieter, but very picturesque.

· Saint Pauli is the place to be if you are in town for the nightlife, as there are lots of clubs and late-night bars.

· Speicherstadt is perfect if you want to be close to the sites of Old Town, but closer still to shops and restaurants in the evening.

Useful tips before you go

· Shaking hands is the common in Germany and the polite greeting, so if you are offered a hand, take it.

· Tipping in Germany is usually limited to about 5-10%. For restaurants you generally don’t need to tip on checks of under 10EUR.
