Why visit Frankfurt?

The financial and business brain of Germany, Frankfurt is a high-powered, high-octane city gleaming with skyscrapers that host world-famous trade shows and international business conferences. However, Frankfurt am Mein has a medieval heart and a quaint soul, which keep this city from just being a business stopover. Wander through its gorgeous parks, delightful squares, fascinating museums and imposing churches, and you too will see why Frankfurt is one of Germany’s most interesting cities.

Things to do in Frankfurt

Stroll through Frankfurt’s Altstadt (Old Town) and you will come to the Römerberg, an open square that looks plucked out of a fairytale. It is here you can see the St. Nicholas Church, the Town and Imperial Halls, and the Justice Fountain that sits at its centre. Just down the way there is the wonderful Historical Museum that houses art and artefacts dating from Frankfurt’s medieval past, right through to its present day status as a modern German metropolis.

In fact, from Römerberg, it’s an easy stroll to many of the city’s most popular sites, such as the Gothic Frankfurt Cathedral—St. Bartholomew’s, St. Paul’s church, and the lovely waterfront along the Main River.

Budding literati will love the Goethe Museum, once the home of Germany’s most famous scribe. Explore the rooms this celebrated author once lived in, and see the attached gallery for an insight into the time in which Goethe wrote. Once you’re done, head to Goethestrasse, Frankfurt’s most chic shopping street, for a little retail therapy, or a pick-me-up lunch.

If you’d like to go a little further afield, Frankfurt is ideally located for several day trips, such as to the gorgeous and picturesque Rhine Valley, or to the chocolate box medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most photographed towns in the country.
