Things to do in Frankfurt

Stroll through Frankfurt’s Altstadt (Old Town) and you will come to the Römerberg, an open square that looks plucked out of a fairytale. It is here you can see the St. Nicholas Church, the Town and Imperial Halls, and the Justice Fountain that sits at its centre. Just down the way there is the wonderful Historical Museum that houses art and artefacts dating from Frankfurt’s medieval past, right through to its present day status as a modern German metropolis.

In fact, from Römerberg, it’s an easy stroll to many of the city’s most popular sites, such as the Gothic Frankfurt Cathedral—St. Bartholomew’s, St. Paul’s church, and the lovely waterfront along the Main River.

Budding literati will love the Goethe Museum, once the home of Germany’s most famous scribe. Once you’re done, head to Goethestrasse, Frankfurt’s most chic shopping street, for a little retail therapy, or a pick-me-up lunch.

If you’d like to go a little further afield, Frankfurt is ideally located for several day trips, such as to the gorgeous and picturesque Rhine Valley, or to the chocolate box medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most photographed towns in the country.

Best time to visit Frankfurt

· For warm, sunny days, the months of June to September promise nice temperatures of around 24°C, and very little rain.

· Once autumn gets underway, the city gets very busy due to the trade shows that are held here, and accommodation prices skyrocket.

· Though the average highs of the winter season are around 5°C, the colder months in Frankfurt can be lovely, with lots of traditional Christmas markets popping up, and the snow covering old town, this city can be a magical place in the winter.

· For competitive prices on flights to Frankfurt, you’re best booking about 15 weeks in advance.

Arriving in Frankfurt by plane

· Frankfurt Airport (FRA) operates the flights for the city of Frankfurt am Main.There are many airlines that fly into Frankfurt, some of which are Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Qantas, United, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta, and ANA.

· Frankfurt Airport has a lot of facilities, such as free WiFi, banking and bureau de change services, as well as a variety of restaurants and kiosks to grab food from. The airport is located only 12km from the city centre, making it an easy travel hub to access.

· You won’t find direct flights to Frankfurt from Australia, but there are many routes that travel there via Singapore (SIN), Bangkok (BKK) or Doha (DOH).

Visa requirements

· Usually if you’re an Australian traveller you will not need a visa to gain entry into Frankfurt. It’s worth checking the travel information listed on the government advice website on travel to Germany just to make sure you are eligible for the visa waiver.

Transportation to city centre

· You can grab a taxi into town, but expect to drop about 30EUR ($46) on the journey.

· For other transport, there is an online search tool you can use for booking airport transfers with us, or you can take shuttle, bus or rail services into Frankfurt.

Where to stay in Frankfurt

· Innerstadt is the central part of the city, and the easiest for visitors to access most of the city’s attractions. There’s the popular shopping street Zeil, plus plenty of bars and restaurants within this part of the Frankfurt.

· If you’re looking to indulge in the nightlife, book a hotel in Sachsenhausen, a neighbourhood south of the river, and full of trendy bars and nightclubs.

Useful tips before you go

· It is not expected in Germany for patrons to tip, but if you want to leave something then 5-10% is standard.
