Florence Regional Airport (FLO)

Though Florence Airport (FLO) is a small regional facility, it is only 4km outside of downtown Florence, and offers a decent selection of amenities for travelling customers.

These include a free WiFi service throughout the airport, conference rooms that are available for rental, a business centre where passengers can work before they board their flight, and a vending facility that provides snacks and beverages if you are feeling peckish. There are no cash machines in FLO Airport and it is recommended that if you need to use an ATM, to do so in town.  

Airlines that fly to Florence

There is only one airline that operates at FLO Airport, and that is American Airlines. They only offer flights between Florence and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), but this larger transport facility runs flights to destinations around the USA and abroad.  

Getting into Florence

By taxi

Though taxis do service this airport, you are better off organising the journey in advance. The ride into town is a short and sweet ten minutes, and shouldn’t cost you any more than 10USD ($13), even with a tip.  

By public transportation

The PDRTA run a bus (FT3) into downtown Florence, but you have to make your way to Wendor Estates which can be pretty inconvenient and time consuming, and generally not recommended, especially if you are carrying heavy luggage. There are shuttle services you can book in advance, that will take you door-to-door, and in half the time.  

By car

FLO Airport is conveniently serviced by three car hire companies, these are Avis, Budget, Enterprise/National-Alamo and Hertz. If you’d rather book your vehicle in advance, you can utilise our handy car hire search tool.  

What can you do in Florence?

Florence is a quintessential southern city, where the local population is friendly and very welcoming. However, despite Florence’s small town charm it has moved with the times, boasting a performance centre, a symphony orchestra, a series of festivals, a variety of museums, and the Southern Professional Hockey League.  

The downtown area is where you will find most Florentine attractions, including the aforementioned Florence Symphony Orchestra, the Performing Arts Center and the Florence Museum of Art, Science and History. In this last, you will be able to delve into work produced by local and regional artists, learn about the history of the county, and see the In Times of War exhibition which charts the community’s involvement in all sorts of different conflicts, from the Civil War right up until World War 2.

In town you’ll also be able to enjoy the restaurants, bars and cafes that litter the leafy streets, just don’t forget to try the BBQ here, as South Carolina state is hailed as the birthplace of this delicious American cuisine.  

If you want to take advantage of the great outdoors, then there are two public golf courses, and the Clemson University Outdoor Recreation Trail, where you can enjoy the region’s lovely local environment. 

When should you go?

Summers in Florence are generally hot, and winters are fairly mild in this county. However, spring (March-May) is considered the best time of year to go. The weather in this season is very pleasant and the natural surrounds of the town are lit with a riot of colour that come primarily from the azaleas and camellias. Expect highs in spring to be between 20-28°C with lows of about 5-15°C.

Visa: All foreign travellers to the United States of America will need a visa. Some visitors will qualify for the ESTA, a visa issued online. If you don’t, then it is advised that you check the United States Government website to see your individual requirements for entry.
