Car Hire at Florence Regional Airport

This information is correct as of July 2015.

Florence is a town to explore in South Carolina due to its wide range of opportunities to shop in numerous national franchises and eat at restaurants featuring local cuisine and other tasty dishes. Various attractions can also be found in this part of the United States such as the Florence Symphony or Little Theatre at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Centre and Florence Civic Centre. The Lynches River Park and the SC Revolutionary Rivers Trail can also be found here. Checking them all out can be done if you fly to Florence Regional Airport.

Where to hire a car at Florence Regional Airport

Florence Regional Airport features a number of public transport options, but there are times you can think about getting a car rental. The airport offers a number of opportunities you can take from Avis, Budget, Enterprise/National-Alamo, and Hertz. They offer different types of cars, which you can look at and compare according to your needs. A sedan might be useful for city driving, but a 4WD is more suitable if you are planning to visit the countryside.

In addition to a licence from your home country, you may have to show an International Driver's Permit (IDP). Other documents may also be necessary, depending on the requirements put forward by the rental company. Contact them beforehand or book in advance, so you do not have to perform the initial steps upon arriving at the airport.

What to expect when hiring a car from Florence Airport

The roads surrounding the airport are US-76, US-301, US-52, and SC-51, which can be busy especially during the peak season. There are also instances when roadworks and events disrupt the flow of traffic around the area, which makes it necessary to check for traffic updates on the date of your arrival in the airport. The towns that can be reached from these roads include Marion, Mullins, Dillon, Johnsonville, Hemingway, Nesmith, Kingstree, Manning, Sumter, Mulberry, Bishopville, Cassat, Hartsville, and many others.

There are two toll roads in South Carolina: US-278 (Cross Island Parkway) and I-185 (Southern Connector), which you will need to take note of, when laying out your itinerary. You can pay with cash or PAL PASS, depending on the charges you incur. No congestion charges are implemented here, but you should reserve an amount, just in case. There may also be one-way roads, as there are certain lines with signposts saying, 'Right Lane must turn right' or 'Exit Only'. Bicycles may also use some of the main roads, so you should be more careful when you drive. When looking for petrol stations, you will find a BP station and a Sunoco Gas Station on US-76. Exxon, AmeriGas, and Murphy USA, on the other hand, are located on US-52/US-301.

Driving around Florence Regional Airport

The proximity between the airport and the town proper of Florence is very minimal. You can venture to the town from the airport if you head south on Terminal Drive towards Missle Street and then turn right at the 1st cross street onto Missle Street. Turn right onto S McCall Boulevard and then take a left at the 1st cross street onto US-76 W. Make a slight right onto E Cheves Street/State Road S-21-92 and then go on to your destination. The peak congestion hours here usually lie in commuting times of the day, specifically at the mornings and early afternoon. Parking can be arranged with establishments offering spaces.

Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road, and remember to look first to the left when crossing the road. Take additional care when pulling out of junctions, one-way streets, and at roundabouts. If you want to turn left at a junction, you must pass in front of a car turning left coming from the opposite direction. There is also no automatic priority to the right or left on any road. A turning vehicle, though, must give way to one going straight ahead.
