Chiang Mai International Airport is an international airport that serves the capital city of the Chiang Mai province in Thailand. It was established in 1921 as Suthep Airport.

Chiang Mai International Airport is the major gateway to the northern part of Thailand and is also currently the fourth busiest airport in the country. The Chiang Mai International Airport is open from 5:00 a.m. until midnight to cater for night departures.

 

When Suvarnabhumi Airport was closed in the year 2008 due to protests, Chiang Mai International Airport became the alternative stop-over for airlines such as China Airlines' Taipei-Europe flights and for Swiss International Airlines' Singapore-Zurich flights in the interim. In early 2011, Chiang Mai International Airport also became a secondary hub for Thai AirAsia.

 

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – The Theravada Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand is also known as the "Doi Suthep" which is actually the name of the mountain it is located on. For those planning to travel to the temple, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is located 15km from the city of Chiang Mai and is a sacred site to many Thai people.
