The Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport (CFU) is the only airport serving the island of Corfu. This is a fairly small aviation facility, but you can find most of the amenities you’ll need here. There is a bank, access to an ATM, plus currency exchange services, there’s an information desk, free WiFi, a café and bar, plus a seasonal restaurant, and there’s a decent duty-free shop you can browse in.

The transport services are buses and taxis, with the latter costing 15-20EUR ($22-30) for the 3km journey into Corfu.

The airport is located an easy 5km distance from Thira, the main town. You can get a bus into town, but this only comes periodically. Taxis are your next best option, and you can expect the fare to come to about 20EUR ($29) for the 15 minute journey.

Codeshare and connecting flights to Corfu are operated by Olympic Air. Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Aegean Airlines, Etihad Airways, Qantas, and Qatar Airways.

Why visit Corfu?

Descending on Corfu is an experience that every type of traveller can enjoy. There are magical beaches in every direction; from long golden stretches, to quiet coves, and party enclaves for those seeking a little R & R. The island’s interior meanwhile is where you will see windswept Cyprus trees framing olive groves, and edging mountainsides. Things to do in Corfu

Like every Greek Isle, you can find the remnants of the ancient civilisations that ruled and roamed these islands. If you love history, you should visit the Corfu Archaeological Museum, with artefacts collected from all over the island, but particularly Kanoni, the ancient capital of Corfu.

Then journey to the Byzantine church of Saints Jason and Sosipater, a fine example of 11^th century architecture. While you’re at it, see the Old Fortress that rambles along a rocky outcrop next to Corfu’s Old Town. From here it is a lovely walk down to the Old Town, where you can sit in the Esplanade, a bright sunny square perfect for sipping on a coffee at one of the many cafes in the area, and within a stone’s throw of the nearby Neoclassical Royal Palace.

Then visit the iconic 17^th century Vlacherna Monastery, that seems to float on the azure waters off the mainland.

Lastly, you should spend your days beach hopping around Corfu’s most beautiful stretches. Paleokastritsa is a delightful town, offering six beaches, each with golden sands, and warm, sapphire waters. This area is great for watersports enthusiasts, and those that want a little lively activity with their sunbathing. Head to Sidari if you are travelling with children, as they will love the accompanying waterpark, or to Kalamaki, where the waters remain shallow for a long stretch.

Best time to visit Corfu

·         For perfect beach weather, and reliable sunshine, June through August will produce days seeing highs of 30-31°C.

·         If you’d rather a quieter scene, the early autumn months of September and October will still see warm summery days of 23-28°C, and lower hotels rates.

Arriving in Corfu by plane

·         For Corfu you will be subject to two layovers, usually routed through Middle Eastern hubs like Doha (DOH) and Abu Dhabi (AUH), and Athens (ATH).
