Budapest Franz Liszt Airport (BUD) is the primary aviation facility in the enchanting city of Budapest. It also serves as a key hub for a lot of transit operations in Hungary. You’ll find ATMs, free WiFi, bureau de change counters, a good range of shops (including duty-free retailers), and numerous restaurants, as well as a couple of bars.

Getting to and from the airport is easily done via Budapest’s buses, which can connect you to the rail and metro services. Otherwise, shuttles and taxis are your main transportation links. Expect a taxi fare to total about 6,500HUF ($30).

Things to do in Budapest

Begin a tour of this city by learning a bit about its history and culture in its fantastic museums. Start in Castle Hill, where you’ll find many of the city’s most interesting buildings and museums are clustered. Its star is the remarkable Buda Castle that rises up and looks over the city. You can tour the courtyards and gardens, and then take a tour of the castle itself.

However, for a real investigation into Budapest’s history, you must go to the Hungarian National Museum, which has a superb collection that charts Hungary’s progress throughout the ages. There is also the Museum of Fine Arts, a must for any aesthetics fan, as this is the most important gallery in the country, and houses a fantastic ancient arts and sculpture exhibitions.

Then across the Danube, head to the extraordinary Parliament buildings, which in the afternoon light looks like a painting, rather than a real place. You can go on guided tours within the building, and see the famous crown jewels. Afterwards, get some fresh air by walking along the promenade; there are plenty of delightful eateries and shops along here, and it makes for a pleasant afternoon’s wandering. But perhaps the biggest attraction is the very moving steel shoes on the Danube, small sculptures that memorialise the Jewish victims that were killed here in World War 2.

Best time to visit Budapest

·         The summer months—June, July and August—are the best time of year to visit Budapest. The days are long and tend to stick around 20-25°C, which makes for ideal sightseeing weather.

·         Shoulder seasons are pleasant, though on the chillier side, so make sure you pack lots of layers.

·         Winters are cold, and a lot of the attractions in the city close down for this low season, so unless you like the quiet, this season is best avoided.

Arriving in Budapest

·         This is a long-haul journey, so flying from Australia will involve one or two stops, typically in Dubai (DXB), Bangkok (BKK), Vienna (VIE) or Doha (DOH).
