Why visit Bogota?

The city of Bogota is one of South America’s beauties; backed by the Andean mountains, and wrapping its modern fringes around a beautiful Old Town, it is easy to see why so many people leave Bogota singing its praises. Engage in the best activities of the city, by dancing in the clubs, dining in its restaurants, and touring its museums, then use it as a base to strike out, and explore the lakes, forests and mountains of its surrounds.

Things to do in Bogota

Get a grip on the city’s layout by heading up the impressive Cerro de Monserrate, a mount in the middle of the city topped by a beautiful white-washed church. If you don’t fancy the hike up to the 3000 metre high summit, then hop on the funicular car, just don’t forget to bring your camera!

When you head back down to earth, head to old part of town, called La Candelaria. Wander its cobbled laneways, and sit and watch the world go by in its plazas. Take the time to visit Plaza Bolivar in particular, which boasts the National Capitol, the Palace of Justice and the city’s cathedral.

Investigating the city’s culture during the day will likely lead you to the fantastic Museo del Oro, a museum that has an astounding collection of gold pieces from the indigenous cultures of the region, or to the Botero Museum, an institution dedicated to Colombia’s most famous artist. Then at night, explore the culture of Bogota’s nightlife by spending the small hours in Zona Rosa, the city’s trendiest hotspot.

Outside the city, you can find the waters of Lake Guatavita, hike trails to La Chorrera, the country’s tallest waterfalls, or visit Zipaquira, and its famous Salt Cathedral.
