Servicing the city of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, the Kota Kinabalu Airport is the international hub for this unique part of Malaysia. In 2008, the airport opened up its new Terminal 1 building, complete with a host of modern amenities. It has several premium lounges, duty-free shops, restaurants and snack bars, cash dispensers, currency exchange counters, showers, and free WiFi.

Around 8km outside of the downtown area, and the easiest way to make your way into town is to take a fixed rate taxi, which costs approximately 30MYR ($10). Though you can also take the Airport Bus, or the minibuses for cheaper rates.

Things to do in Kota Kinabalu

In the morning, put your hiking shoes on, and make your way up to the top of Mount Kinabalu, and see the city from the best vantage point in the area. Then when you are back down to earth, there are a whole host of beaches you can explore and relax on. The Tanjung Aru Beach is ten minutes from Kota Kinabalu, a golden sandy bank that is lapped by calm and crystalline waters.

Visit the Gaya Street Sunday Market that holds hundreds of stalls selling souvenirs, food, crafts, antiques and art. Or spend some time in the Sabah Art Gallery, where local and international artists display their work. If you’d rather a chance at seeing some of the wonderful wildlife indigenous to this region, then head to the Lok Kawi wildlife park.

One of the best things to do is to wander down to the city’s waterfront, lined with restaurants and bars, and topped with one of the city’s best shopping venues. Visitors can spend their first evening in Kota Kinabalu enjoying the sunset over the water, whilst trying the excellent local cuisine, much of it fresh seafood. This is also one of the best spots in the city to indulge in the nightlife, with pubs, clubs and bars, live music and cosy corners to while the wee hours of the night away.

Best time to visit Kota Kinabalu

· January, February and March are all excellent months to see this city, when the weather is dry and not too humid. It’s still fairly hot though, with highs of about 31°C.

· October is the wettest month and can see torrential rains, and is best avoided.
