The Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) is an international hub that services the capital, and also operates as the base for Air Serbia, the nation’s flag carrying airline. The airport has all the standard amenities, such as ATMs, currency exchange, a couple of restaurants, an information desk, medical services, duty-free shops, a children’s area, a small casino and access to free WiFi.

Less than 20km away from central Belgrade, passengers can reach the city easily. There are numerous bus lines into the downtown area, and taxi services that will run you into town for a far of about 1800-2000RSD ($21-23).

Things to do in Belgrade

When you visit Belgrade, there are two important streets you need to know of, the first is the Knez Mihailova Street; a pedestrianised shopping avenue populated with historically important buildings, which include the must-see Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The other is Skadarlija Street, a cobbled pathway where bohemians and artists used to gather. There are live bands, lots of restaurants and bars, and it’s one of the most popular places to get to know the ‘real’ Belgrade.

Then add a little architectural splendor to your trip by heading first to the Old Palace that once housed the Obrenović dynasty, followed by a visit to the Royal Palace, where the present-day royal, the Crown Prince Alexander, currently resides. But the real city highlight is the Belgrade Fortress. Set in the lovely Kalemegdan Park, and sitting on a hill that overlooks the Sava and Danube rivers, this fort was built on ancient Roman foundations, with portions raised and remodeled in medieval times, and then again during the Turkish rule of the city.

For cultural attractions, visit the House of Flowers, the burial site and dedicated museum to the communist leader, Josip Broz Tito. Then make time to learn about one of Serbia’s most famous sons, Nikola Tesla, by visiting the Tesla Museum, a fascinating collection of his inventions, as well as accompanying documents and photographs that chart this genius’ life.

Best time to visit Belgrade

· Summer (June-July) is best for warmth and sunshine, with days averaging 22-23°C.

· Autumn is also a great time of year to head to this city, as it is much longer than spring and tends to be warmer. Expect highs of around 18°C.

· The long-haul journey to Belgrade will involve a stop or two, usually in hubs like Abu Dhabi (AUH), Singapore (SIN), Frankfurt (FRA) and Bangkok (BKK).
