Serving Akiak in Alaska is Akiak Airport, a state-owned public-use airport. It resides at an elevation of 30 feet or nine metres above mean sea level, covering an area of 59 acres or 24 hectares. Akiak Airport operates with a gravel-surfaced runway designated 3/21, measuring 3,196 feet x 75 feet or 974 metres x 23 metres. In 2007, the airport recorded 1,983 passenger boardings or enplanements. Akiak Airport provides year-round chartered or private air access.

Akiak is a city in the Bethel Census Area in Alaska, United States. It is situated on the west bank of Kuskokwim River, 42 miles or 68 kilometres northeast of Bethel in the Bethel Recording District. The name “Akiak” translates to “the other side”, referring to the city’s position as a crossing to the Yukon River basin during the winter for the Yup’ik Eskimos.

What to see & do

Akiak is primarily known for the world’s third largest museum of taxidermy that is located within the city. As part of the Bethel Census Area, travellers should also consider exploring the neighbouring areas within the region, after touring Akiak. The largest community in Bethel Census Area is the city of Bethel, which at the same time, is also the largest city in all of the Unorganized Borough. The city is known as home to the only detention centre in south-western Alaska, the Yukon Kuskokwim Correction Center. When visiting Bethel, tourists can witness and even participate in the annual mid-distance dogsled race Kuskokwim 300, the traditional Yup’ik Cama-i dance festival (held every spring season), and the Bethel Fair held every August. Twice every month, the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center hosts a Saturday Market, where artisans and crafters from the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta come to sell their crafts including traditional Yup’ik qaspeq, story knives, woven baskets, and ulu knives. Local recreation activities that can be enjoyed in the area include snow machining, skiing, bicycling, kayaking, caribou hunting, and salmon fishing.

Akiak Airport provides year-round chartered or private air access. Yute Air operates here, with flights from Akiachack, Bethel, Kwethluk, and Tuluksak – all within the Bethel Census Area in the US state of Alaska. In the summer, Akiak and other communities in the Bethel Census Area can be reached through river travel via the Port of Bethel, the northernmost medium-draft port in the United States. Travellers from other cities, states, and international locations can reach Akiak by flying into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Anchorage, which has flights to Bethel, then from Bethel to Akiak. Flights from Vancouver, Chicago, Fairbanks, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Juneau, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Dallas/Fort Worth, Frankfurt, Reykjavik, and San Francisco, among others, arrive at Anchorage.
