What to see & do

Araxá is a municipality located in southwest Minas Gerais state, Brazil, named after the Indian tribe "Araxas" who used to reside here at the time it was first discovered. The name means “the place from where the sun is seen first.” It is comprised of 10 municipalities: Araxá, Campos Altos, Ibiá, Nova Ponte, Pedrinópolis, Perdizes, Pratinha, Sacramento, Santa Juliana, and Tapira. According to the 2012 census, Araxá had a population of 95,888. The municipality area is 1,283 square kilometres, with 345 square kilometres making up the urban perimeter. The city centre is elevated at 973 metres, and the municipality’s highest point is Serra da Bocaina with 1,359 metres, and the lowest point is Rio Capivara with 910 metres. Araxá has mines of niobium (columbium), which is used in jet engine components, rocket sub-assemblies, and heat-resisting and combustion equipment. In addition, it is also a major producer of phosphate concentrate, which is vital for the fertiliser production.

The municipality earned a reputation in Brazil for its spa, which utilises medicinal mud and mineral waters. Another known spot and a centre of attraction in Araxá is the Grand Hotel, one of the most emblematic hotels in the country. Since its opening in 1944, the hotel became the stage for huge social, political, and cultural events, thereby introducing an era of splendour to Araxá and the inland region of the state. In fact, "Dona Beja," one of Brazil's most famous soap operas, was filmed here.
