Vopnafjordur Airport is a public and commercial airport found in Vopnafjordur, in Austurland, Iceland. It mainly serves the village of Vopnafjordur in the Eastern Region; a small airport with a rather low elevation of 10 feet. It has a single runway measuring 2,903 feet, and is one of the airports found in the East of Iceland. Norlandair, the sole carrier flying to Vopnafjordur, flies between the village and two other destinations, Akureyri International Airport at the north-central part of Iceland, and Þórshöfn Airport or Thorshofn Airport in Þórshöfn, found in North-Eastern Iceland.

Vopnafjordur is a small village and municipality in North-Eastern Iceland, standing on a peninsula in the middle of a fjord. It belongs to the Nordur-Mulasysla county of Iceland, and like any countryside village, it is scarcely populated - with only 668 inhabitants equalling to some 10-15 families. Its total land area, which is 1,913.48km2, makes a whole square mile available for a single person alone.

The village was first inhabited by Vikings in ninth century CE, naming the place Vopnafjordur which literally means Weapon Fjord or Weapon Bay. Through the 10th century, disputes between local chieftains led to a number of killings, with the stories included in the Vopnfirðinga saga, one of the classic Sagas of Icelanders. The Sagas of Icelanders is a series of epic family histories written in the 13th century. Towards the 17th and 18th centuries, the village has become one of the three trade ports in Iceland, and by 19th century, Danish trading company Ørum & Wulff had extensive operations in the area. Modern infrastructure, including roads, harbours, and bridges, where first introduced in the area by the early 20th century, and today, it continues to build establishments in the area with the highest standards.

Transportation in the area is limited to private vehicles, with long and winding roads to travel on. Picturesque views of the ocean as well as the highlands can be seen from the roads, and the driveways are usually empty.
