The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is located in Jefferson Paris in the state of Louisiana, west of downtown New Orleans. Serving the New Orleans metropolitan area and southeast Louisiana, the airport consists of two terminals servicing numerous domestic destinations and a few international routes.
There are several ways to get to downtown New Orleans from the airport. The quickest option is to take a taxi for a flat fee from the airport to anywhere in the French Quarter or the Central Business District (CBD). A slightly cheaper alternative is to take the airport shuttle that will get you to your hotel in the CBD. However, the cheapest way to get into town is by the public Jefferson Transit Airport Express bus. Though the journey takes a slightly longer time compared to that of a taxi, the buses stop at major destinations, so you can easily transfer to the local network to get to your destination. Once you’re in the French Quarter or the CBD, getting around is really simple as the city’s public transport network is fairly extensive and reliable, with some lines running round the clock. You are also encouraged to explore the city on foot during the day, as it is the best way to experience the charms and idiosyncrasies of the area. Alternatively, try renting a bicycle from one of the bike rental companies in the French Quarter or Marigny.
New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz and it’s particularly known for its cuisine as well as annual festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. It is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is a melting pot of French, Creole, African-American, Caribbean, Haitian, Irish, and German cultures. The French Quarter is a one of the best places to start your trip in New Orleans. As the oldest and most famous section of the city, you will find many historic establishments, museums and markets.
To get a glimpse into the history of New Orleans, visit the 1850s House, an antebellum-era house furnished to represent life in New Orleans during the mid-19th century. The museum is furnished to demonstrate life reminiscent of middle class family during the most prosperous period in New Orleans’ history. Highlights include a collection of New Orleans silver and a six-piece bedroom suite, comprising a large half-tester bed, a duchesse or dressing table, two mirror-faced armoires, a washstand and a nightstand. It is recommended that you sign up for an informative guided tour with docents and curators.
Complete your trip to the birthplace of jazz by heading to a live music venue. Of particular interest is the Preservation Hall, one of the city’s more intimate jazz venues. Established in 1961, the hall frequently showcases some of New Orleans’ finest performers and was one of Louis Armstrong’s favourite venues. Situated in the heart of the French Quarter, the Preservation Hall should definitely be on your list of sites to visit.
