Jorge Chávez International Airport is also known as the Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez. The Jorge Chávez International Airport is the main international and domestic airport of Peru. The airport is located in Callao, where it is 11km from the Historic Centre of Lima and 17km from Miraflores. In Peru, Callao is the port city which is now fully integrated with Lima, the country's capital. The Jorge Chávez International Airport for many years was the hub for the now defunct Aeroperú and Compañía de Aviación Faucett, which is one of the oldest airlines in Latin America.

Currently, the construction of a second runway in the Jorge Chávez International Airport is a very important project and is scheduled to be completed in 2014. Miami-based architectural office Arquitectonica and Lima Airport Partners has set out to approve the construction of a second terminal and the further expansion of the main terminal.

What to see & do in Lima

Lima is the sprawling capital of Peru, regarded as the "Garden City" and one of the megacapitals of the world. Visit the Aliaga House, the oldest house in the Americas which houses a wide range of Peruvian art and artefacts. Walk around the Jirón de la Unión mall and admire neoclassical and Art Deco architecture, as well as enjoy street performances while shopping. The Church of San Francisco in downtown Lima is one the best-preserved churches in the city, built around late 1600s in baroque style and boasts multiple gilded side altars, as well as a lattice dome. Its famous feature is its catacombs, which are part of Lima's original cemeteries. How to get around Lima

At Lima, Peru, travellers can opt for the Lima Metro as its mass ground transit system. It links downtown Lima with Villa el Salvador. The Lima Metro’s 16 passenger stations starts at Park of Villa El Salvador, south of the city, continuing on to Av. Pachacútec in Villa María del Triunfo and then to Av. Los Héroes in San Juan de Miraflores. Then it continues through Av. Tomás Marsano in Surco to reach Ov. Los Cabitos, and on to Av. Aviación to finish in Av. Grau in the city centre. Lima also has many taxis which can be used, but travellers must ride cautiously as there are no metres and price will be agreed upon before the journey starts.

How to get to Lima

Navigating around Lima can be done by taxi, vans, buses, and trains. You can take the taxi if you’re going to a farther destination. Micro Buses or Combi Vans can either be small vans, mini-buses, or full-sized buses that stop at designated “paraderos” in upscale parts of the city. Medium and large buses operate similar to micro buses but are usually slower and safer. For express journeys, take the Metropolitano, which is a modern, rapid transport bus system with its own dedicated lanes. Metro de Lima/Tren Eléctrico serves the rail lines along Villa el Salvador, Parque Industrial, María Auxiliadora, Jorge Chávez, Ayacucho, Angamos, San Borja Sur, Javier Prado, Arriola, Gamarra, and Grau.
