Melbourne Airport is one of the country’s largest airline hubs, so there are a good list of amenities for passengers flying out of MEL. If you like to shop, there are a variety of international and Australian brands you can purchase wares in, such as Victoria’s Secret, Rip Curl and the Sunglasses Hut. If you’re hungry, there’s everything from fast food, to healthy eating options, as well as bars and snack kiosks. Otherwise, you can find banking facilities, a currency exchange service, ATMs, a medical centre and free WiFi throughout the terminals.

Samui Airport is very small, but beautiful, with a lounge area that is plush and delightful. There aren’t a copious amount of facilities here, but the ones the airport has a top of the range. There are three coffee shops, two lovely restaurants and a traditional Thai spa, all within the airport building.

Transport

If you want to take a taxi or a private car to your accommodation, then you must book within the airport. Prices for this service can range from 500-1500THB ($20-60) depending on where in the island you are staying.

For public transportation, there are only min-buses that function like shared ride vans. These are a much cheaper way to get around the island, costing between 100-200THB ($4-8) per-person, but you have to wait until the bus is full before it will depart.

If you’d prefer to drive, there are several car hire companies in Samui Airport, such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.

Generally it is recommended that you leave 120-180 minutes for a relaxed check-in and security procedure.

Time difference: Koh Samui is 4 hours behind Melbourne.

Weather: The best time to visit Koh Samui is between December and June, and in particular, the months of December through to February when the weather is dry and warm, hovering around 30°C. However, this is also the most popular time to visit, and prices are at their peak in this period. If you’d rather skip the crowds and embrace the heat, hold off flying until March. In March the temperature gauge rises to 35°C, but the prices, and number of tourists drop. Avoid October through to November, when the heaviest rainfall occurs.

Koh Samui is far cheaper than Melbourne, and whatever you do on this island you’ll find the prices are generally friendlier. Three dinner courses for two people at a mid-range restaurant will cost about 1000THB ($40).
