Shageluk Airport is a public airport serving the city of Shageluk in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located 1.85 km north of Shageluk's central business district. The airport lies over an area of 148 acres, residing at an elevation of 79 ft (24 m) above mean sea level. It has a runway designated 16/34 with a gravel surface, originally measuring 2,200 ft x 35 ft. It was expanded to its current size of 3,400 ft x 50 ft (1,036 m x 15 m). In addition, the airport has a seaplane landing area on the Innoko River: it is designated 18W/36W and measures 5,000 ft x 1,000 ft.

The small city of Shageluk, with a total area of only 31 km² and a population of 129 at the 2000 census, is only one of the many communities in the Yukon–Koyukuk Census Area. The census area occupies a total area of 382,810 km², of which 376,860 km3 is land and 6,000 km² is water. It is the largest unorganized borough of Alaska, and the largest subdivision of any U.S. State, Territory, and Federal District.

Koyukuk National Wildlife Refuge - The Koyukuk National Wildlife Refuge covers 14,000 km² in Alaska. The conservation area encompasses the floodplain of the Koyukuk River, where several species of salmon migrate up to their spawning habitats. Hunting, especially for moose, is allowed on refuge lands, in accordance with Alaska state and federal regulations. Make sure to stop by the Koyukuk Refuge office for interpretive displays, maps, books, videos, and other resources about the region's plants, wildlife, and ecosystems. The office occasionally hosts bird walks, plant identification field trips, and nature/art workshops; inquire at the refuge office for schedules.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge - The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Arctic Refuge or ANWR for short, is located in northeastern Alaska. It lies over an area of 78,050.59 km², making it the largest National Wildlife Refuge in the country. The refuge offers a wide and wild variety of wilderness opportunities for its visitors. The most basic is of course wildlife viewing, and most will have to do even a little bit of hiking to get to anywhere in the refuge. There is an endless array of specimens to take photos of, as well as numerous picturesque views. Camping is a favourite activity, and a few go hunting, fishing, or birding.

Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge - As the name suggests, this protected wetland area in Alaska established as a refuge in 1980 encompasses most of the Yukon Flats. It is less than half the size of the ANWR, occupying only 34,942.63 km², but is the third largest National Wildlife Refuge in the country. Yukon Flats is a major waterfowl breeding ground.
