Discover Pikangikum

The Pikangikum Airport is a public-type airport owned and operated by the Government of Ontario. It is located one nautical mile (1.9 kilometres; 1.2 miles) northeast of the First Nations community of Pikangikum, a community in the Ontario region of Canada. It stands at an elevation of 1,117 feet or 340 metres above mean sea level, with one gravel runway measuring 3,508 feet or 1,069 metres long (09/27 direction). The airport has an IATA identifier of YPM, and an ICAO code of CYPM.
 
What to see & do
The Pikangikum First Nation is the location of the Pikangikum Airport. It is an Ojibwe First Nation on the Pikangikum 14 Reserve, located in Unorganized Kenora District in Northwestern Ontario in Canada. The main centre is the community of Pikangikum, on Pikangikum Lake on the Berens River which is part of the Hudson Bay drainage system. The community has a registered population of 2,443 (2011), with 2,334 living on the reserve. Attractions in this area include experiencing the local culture and watching the youth play hockey. Within Pikangikum, travellers will find a small business centre which houses the ten-room Pikangikum Hotel, a restaurant, and other offices. Those who are looking more activities to do and places to see may head to nearby Red Lake and Poplar Hill First Nation. Red Lake is an enclave within Unorganized Kenora District, home to the Red Lake Mine, one of the richest gold mines in the world. Popular tourism activities in the town include hunting and summer sports fishing, as well as golfing at the Red Lake Gold and Country Club, swimming at Rahill Beach, and exploring the bays and arms of Red Lake by boat. Tourists will also find here the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre, which is close to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park and Pakwash Provincial Park. Poplar Hill First Nation, on the other hand, is located in Thunder Bay, north of Red Lake, near the Ontario-Manitoba border.
 
How to get around
Since it is a small community, main ways of getting around Pikangikum include walking and using private vehicles and/or transport. Public utility vehicles, public transport, and others, are only limited to the airport services. Currently, Pikangikum is building a controlled access all-weather emergency road to avoid dangerous rapids on the Berens River as well as reduce the boat ride into the area to about four kilometres. Pikangikum also has winter road access to Poplar Hill First Nation in the north, and Red Lake and Ontario Highway 125 in the south.
 
How to get there
The Pikangikum Airport is the main airport of the Pikangikum First Nation. It is located near the community of Pikangikum, and is basically within the cold regions of Ontario. Airlines that travel to the destination include Perimeter Aviation, with services to and from Sandy Lake and Winnipeg. The community is also served by Pikangikum Water Aerodrome.
