Neskantaga First Nation, formerly known as Lansdowne House Indian Band, in the Ontario province in Canada, is a remote Oji-Cree First Nation Community. Located along the shore of Attawapiskat Lake in the Kenora District, the community covers 831.5 hectares or 2,054.7 acres of the Neskantaga Indian Reserve. Within the reserve is the main community of Lansdowne House Indian Settlement. The Summer Beaver Indian Settlement, which is shared with Nibinamik First Nation, is also associated with Neskantaga First Nation. The community is located within Northwestern Ontario.
What to see & do
One of the known attractions in Kenora District, where Neskantaga First Nation is located, is the Sturgeon Lake Caldera, one of the best-preserved mineralised Neoarchean caldera complexes in the world, containing well-preserved mafic-intermediate pillow lavas, pillow breccias, hyaloclastite and peperites, submarine lava domes, and dome-associated breccia deposits. Kenora City, the district’s seat, is surrounded by wilderness and lakes waiting to be explored. The city is located on the northern tip of Lake of the Woods and is in “cottage country”, and is also known as vacation haven in Central Canada. Lake of the Woods is the second largest inland lake in Ontario, with more than 14,000 islands. Exploring the lake is best done by boating, canoeing, kayaking, or taking a guided tour. Other attractions in Kenora also include the Kenora Heritage Townscape Murals along the streets of Kenora and Keewatin; the Lake of the Woods Museum, one of the finest small museums in Canada; the Keewatin Potholes formed by the action of running water during glaciation; and the M.S. Kenora, a cruise ship passing by Coney Island beach, through the scenic channels south of Kenora, and through the Devil’s Gap. Other activities that can also be enjoyed in Kenora are beach opportunities like picnic and swimming; fishing and angling; cycling; skiing; and hunting.
How to get around
Neskantaga First Nation can be accessed through winter roads and ice roads, via the Northern Ontario Resource Trail. There are also car rental agencies in Northwestern Ontario, which are available in Kenora, Red Lake, Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, and North Bay.
